How is protection assessed? We'll explain
The protection provided by a product is based on two factors: 1) coverage of the zone to protect, 2) ability to absorb shocks. - To identify the protection zone, we conducted anatomical studies of the tibia. - For shock absorption, we, together with a dozen (male/female) boxers, studied the amount of energy transferred by a blow during sparring at an intermediate level. The 500 shin guard absorbs an impact of 10 joules (the standard calls for 3 joules), while remaining as lightweight as possible
How to design a shin guard that stays in place
To ensure your shin guard stays in place throughout your entire session, we started out with anatomical data. The goal? A design that truly hugs the shape of the tibia (shin). In this way, the foam is modelled along the natural lines of the shin ensuring your protective piece fits just right. We added 2 straps with a two-way buckle that allows you to snugly fit the shin guard to your lower leg.
A shin guard that transforms into a shin-instep guard
Some combat sports are practised while wearing shin guards (such as savate), while others are practised wearing shin-instep guards (such as Muay Thai). What if you practise both types? Combining your 500 Ergo shin guard with your 500 ankle brace creates a shin-instep guard without having to get another set of gear and with the same level of protection!
The story of this product
From the start we wanted a product that accurately fits the shin while being easy to convert into a shin-instep guard. So our product design team started out with anatomic studies in conjunction with the SportsLab, then 3D models and tests using different types of material. After a ton of feedback, a host of prototypes, lab tests and multiple tests in sports clubs with over thirty boxers, we are proud to introduce a product that is lightweight, ergonomic, and progressive!
Our design team explains the twist effect
The so-called twist effect happens when a shin guard slips out of place during training, either to the side, or up or down. This can result in losing valuable training time and momentum while having to readjust your shin guards. This is why we are proud to offer a shin guard that truly solves this problem. Now fighters can fully focus on training! It provides a feeling of freedom of movement, fits much better, and is therefore more comfortable."
