How to choose the right wetsuit (part 1)
The first selection criterion when choosing a surfing wetsuit is the water temperature. Water temperature varies according to the location and the time of the year. Always make sure that the water temperature at your spot corresponds to the recommended temperature range: Warm water above 20°C. Temperate water between 17°C and 22°C. Cold water between 12°C and 17°C. Very cold water between 7°C and 12°C. Visit the site seatemperature.org to find out your spot’s temperature.
How to choose the right size Part 2:
The other thing to take into account is the length of your sessions. If your sessions last less than an hour, the 100 models will be suitable. For up to 2 hours, opt for the 500 models. For up to 3 hours, the 900 models.
Compared to the 100 models, the 500 models are warmer, more watertight, more efficient at reducing fatigue and preventing irritation, and offer more freedom of movement. The same is true for the 900 models compared with the 500 models.
Note: the 900 models are easier to put on.
Choose the right size
Choosing the correct size helps you make the most of your wetsuit. A surfing wetsuit should fit very tightly: there should be no visible folds. It’s perfectly normal to feel like it is too tight when dry. This discomfort disappears as soon as the wetsuit gets wet. If you choose a wetsuit that is too big, folds will appear. You will experience irritation and your thermal comfort will be reduced, letting in water.
Try it on before you buy it!
Olaian 900 wetsuits are made from 100% ultra-stretchy neoprene for thermal comfort and flexibility. The neoprene is lined with synthetic fabric for added resistance to wear. 5 mm neoprene on the torso and 4 mm on the arms and legs. The flexibility of the 900 range is provided by the stretchy properties of the foam and the textile.
The neck finish has been designed to reduce irritation. Depending on the sensitivity of the wearer, a UV top can be worn under the wetsuit to reduce the risk of irritation. The application of grease (e.g. Vaseline) in friction areas (neck, armpits, knees) is also recommended if wearing the wetsuit for long periods.
Freedom of movement
The Olaian 900 wetsuit range offers a style and material specifically chosen to facilitate paddling and freedom of movement. The entire wetsuit is made from ultra-stretchy neoprene. The seams are stretchy. The front zipper frees up the back during use.
Zipper / integrated hood
The 900 5/4 wetsuit features our integrated hood. This design helps stop water entry during long sessions in very cold water.
The front zipper that fastens across the front of the chest ensures freedom of movement while providing a better watertight seal than a traditional back zipper. The zipper slider is made of stainless steel to withstand exposure to salt water.
There is a key pocket in the front panel under the zipper.
The seams are stitched and glued for a watertight seal and durability.
The seams are blind-stitched: the thread does not entirely pass through the neoprene to prevent water from getting through.
To further enhance the watertight seal and durability of the assembly of our 900 range, they are fully taped on the inside.
The absence of threads on the inside also reduces irritation and chafing.
Reinforcement patches are placed on the inside in sensitive areas.
The ankles and wrists have special cuffs to prevent water entry.
They also keep the suit firmly in place when using gloves and boots.
The zipper and hood adjustment systems are designed to be used with one hand. They are large enough to be used with gloves for sessions in very cold water.
The 900 5/4 wetsuit has a new inner lining. For a minimal weight increase in the water and ultra-fast drying. It can be used several times a day while retaining a dry feel when put on.
Stay warm for longer with our thermal accessories!
Each temperature range has its own outfit.
More than half of our body heat is lost through our extremities (feet, hands, head) when we are in the water. In prevent this, here are some recommended accessories:
- in warm water and temperate water (>17°C) => neoprene low booties.
- in cold water (12 - 17°C): High boots and gloves.
- in very cold water (7 - 12°C): Boots, gloves, hoodie, hooded top...

These UV-protection wetnets were developed primarily for surfing, We’ve created a design that’s compatible with many other water sports, including swimming, kitesurfing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, water skiing, and stand-up paddleboarding.
Our 900 range of wetsuits are made from Limestone, a limestone-based neoprene. The black colour of the neoprene, called Eco Carbon Black, is obtained by recycling used tires. The glue used to assemble the textile and neoprene, called Aquaglue, is water-based and solvent-free. The dope-dyed yarn process used for the black colour is water-efficient and environmentally friendly.
