Main component

3-layer material with membrane

Membrane or coating

- A coating is like a paint applied to the inside of the fabric to make it waterproof while remaining breathable. It's often less expensive than a membrane and must be protected by a lining.
- A membrane is a very thin plastic film (polyurethane) that makes the material waterproof while remaining breathable. It's more flexible, lighter, more durable, and often more breathable than a coating.

Jacket structure with a membrane

- 3 layers: The membrane is glued between the outer fabric and inner fabric. Used for resistant and high-performance jackets
- 2.5 layers: The membrane is glued under the outer fabric and protected by a thin film on the inside. Used for lightweight jackets.
- 2 layers: the membrane is glued only to the outer fabric; the inner protective lining is separate. Used for comfortable jackets

Component waterproofing

The resistance of a fabric to water pressure is expressed in terms of the height in mm of a water column (test based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. A component with a 15,000 mm waterproof rating is resistant to the pressure exerted by a 15,000 mm column of water (which roughly corresponds to a 4-hour storm).

Jacket water resistance

This garment was validated in a shower test under 450 L/m²/h of water for 4 h. This test reproduces the average conditions of a mountain storm.

Component breathability

To determine whether a fabric is breathable, we test its evaporative resistance or RET (based on the ISO 11092 standard). The lower the fabric's resistance, the more sweat generated by physical activity can escape, and the higher the fabric's breathability. For example:
RET < 3 = extremely breathable fabric
RET ≤ 6 = very breathable fabric
RET ≤ 12 = breathable fabric
RET ≤ 20 = slightly or not breathable

Jacket breathability

In addition to the breathability of the fabrics used, Quechua develops technical solutions (zippers, air vents, mesh, etc.) to improve the overall ventilation of its jackets and top-layer pants designed for use on long hikes. These ventilation systems regulate the temperature inside the garment while also helping to eliminate perspiration generated during physical activity.

Restoring water repellency

Water repellency is a fabric's ability to cause water to run off its surface without being absorbed, so the material doesn't get soaked. Water repellency is achieved by applying a treatment to the outer surface. This treatment needs to be reapplied during the lifetime of the garment (we recommend every 3 washes).

Nice Jacket but a crucial flaw
Stuart (United Kingdom) Used for 1 week or less
I bought this jacket online. It is really nice and light and looks well made, until you realise that as other people have said that the right hand pocket is not waterproof, this is a design flaw that should have been spotted in testing.
To test if the zip was waterproof, I applied a sprinkling of water over the pocket at home to test before returning it. Unfortunately the zips used are not waterproof over the pocket and there is no waterproof barrier between you and the pocket so you will get wet in heavy downpours.
This seems like a really silly design flaw as the rest of the jacket is really nicely made and would have been great.
Decathlon - there is a really simple fix to this - use waterproof zips on the pockets and put a waterproof membrane behind the chest pockets. You could also put the zips horizontally under the flaps that are already there instead of them being vertical.
That would sort the issue out and make it a great jacket.
Excellent

Right Chest Pocket Leaks
Jay (United Kingdom) Used for 1 week or less
I have been buying Quechua products for many years, and I have always found their quality and price to be very good. So, I was disappointed when the right chest pocket of this jacket started to leak. There is no waterproof material between the inside of this pocket and the wearer, and the zipper on this pocket is not the same waterproof zipper that is found under the arms and on the lower pockets. I recommend Quechua replace the right chest zipper with the type that is under the arms, or use waterproof fabric to line the pocket.
