TECHNICAL INFORMATIONS

Which hiking frequency and intensity?

Our products are classified based on performance and features for 3 mountain-walking levels: - Occasional: a dozen hikes a year of approximately 3 to 4 hours, under 10 km and under 700 m of elevation gain.
- Regular: twenty outings a year. 4 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km, 700 to 1,200 m of elevation gain per outing.
- Intensive: for over 20 outings per year. For over 6 hours, over 20 km, 1,200 to 2,000 m of elevation gain per outing.

Sustainable development information

For the inner sole fabric coating of these shoes, we reduced the environmental impact by dyeing the yarn at the source. Textile dyeing requires a lot of water but also produces waste water from the dye baths. We use a bulk dyeing process, which involves adding the colour pigments when the yarn itself is produced, to reduce the environmental impact.

Grippy sole

Certified sole grip. To earn certification, the boots must pass lab tests to assess their grip rate on different surfaces (smooth, rough, dry, wet). To validate these tests, we have a panel of representative testers evaluate the quality of our soles out in the mountains across 500 km.

Waterproofing test

In a lab, the boot is immersed in water to mid height while on a mechanical arm that simulates walking. We use this test to determine how long and how far the shoe can walk and still stay dry.
This is validated in the field and in the rain to ensure a consistent result in use.

Making waterproofing last longer

To keep your feet dry, we suggest you wear waterproof gaiters or mini-gaiters to protect the top of your shoes and prevent water from getting in, along with stones and sand.

We recommend you re-waterproof your shoes twice a year using a waterproofing agent (search for ‘waterproofing’ on www.decathlon.ca), which will help you restore the original water-repellent properties and help prevent stains on the outside.

Evofit Concept

This shoe is made using the Evofit concept. With its stretch materials and specific design for the area of the foot where joints are located, Evofit technology allows the shoe to perfectly conform to the shape of your foot.

Product design Our expertise

Our Quechua global design centre is based in Passy, at the foot of Mont-Blanc in Haute Savoie.
This location makes it a real meeting place for our teams and outdoor sports enthusiasts.
The perfect spot for designing our mountain hiking products.

What size should I choose?

The most important thing is to try on several sizes and styles to find the one most suited to you.
You can choose one size up from your usual size so your toes won't bump the toe box when going downhill, as long as you still have the proper support to prevent friction.
Tip: keep your toenails short and, before a long descent, check that your laces are tight enough to keep your foot from sliding forwards in the shoe.

Buying tips/how to try on boots

Certain Decathlon stores have a test trail.
1. Try on both shoes, standing up, wearing your hiking socks. 2. Tighten the laces, taking care to make sure they're evenly tightened.
3. Check two points:
- your heel doesn't lift up before the shoe when walking uphill.
- your foot doesn't slide and your toes don't touch the front when going downhill.
4. Try on several sizes and models.

Break them in gradually to adapt them to your feet.

Which socks?

Waterproof shoes are less breathable than non-waterproof shoes. So you'll want socks like the MH500 with a medium-length upper for wicking away perspiration and reducing friction.

Optimize your shoes: replace your insoles!

The original insole in your shoes is designed to fit most feet. Changing the insole may provide:
1. Improved support: some soles are preformed or reinforced to better support the arch of the foot. 2. More comfort: the insoles can also provide warmth and/or cushioning.
3. Longer life: restore the support and comfort of your shoes by replacing the insole each season.

How to avoid blisters

How to care for your shoes

- Leave to air dry.
- Remove dry mud with a stiff brush.
- Clean marks using a brush and some warm water
- Leave to dry
- Spray with a re-waterproofing product to restore the upper's water resistance.

Ragsit

Tough & comfortable
Dave (United Kingdom) Used for 8 to 12 months
I've had mine for 7 months and they have been worn every day. I work outside in all weathers and they've done hiking duties as well . Soles are very hard wearing and hit the sweet spot between protecting your feet from the terrain and feel. Great traction in all but very muddy conditions (cleats are close to each other and tend not to clear quickly). Uppers are as tough. Waterproofing not so good. The shoes began to leak within 2 or 3 months, especially when walking through wet grass. Fit wise, I had to buy shoes a bit too long to cope with my foot width, but they've settled into really comfy shoes. I'd pay more if they can crack the waterproof issue. This is not the 1st time I've had that problem with Decathlon shoes...
Good buy

Some days back there was a heavy downpour. I was walking along a walkway. The walkway was dark as the street lights were blocked by the trees. I walked on a puddle of water for about 10 seconds. The shoes came out as if it was on dry ground. Good traction and the water did not get in. The next day the shoes came out as if it did not go through the puddle of water. Recommended for those who do not wish to slip and fall during exercise.
Response of the brand

Hi (name)!

Thank you for your review for the Men's waterproof mountain hiking shoes - MH500 - Grey!

I am delighted to find you're happy with this product! Yes indeed, this mountain hiking shoe is indeed waterproof. In the laboratory, the boot is immersed in water to mid-height on a mechanical arm that flexes to simulates a number of steps. With this test we can determine a time and number of km that the boot can walk while staying dry. Then we confirm in the field or under the rain, that the shoe meets its promises.

The grip of our soles is certified. To be awarded certification, the boots must pass laboratory tests to assess the grip rate on different surfaces (Smooth, Rugged, Dry, Wet). To validate these tests, we assess the quality of our soles in the field, in the mountains, by a panel of representative testers over 500 km! :)

I hope you enjoy your purchase with us and hope to see you around at Decathlon soon! :)
