Worn as a third layer, this padded jacket has been certified for an active comfort temperature of -5°C during a standardized test in a thermal chamber. The model is wearing a synthetic, long-sleeved T-shirt and a light fleece underneath. Effective in simulated 5 km/h wind. 
We also tested this product in static mode: the comfort temperature is 5°C in this case.

How warm is this padded jacket?

The fill power of down has 3 advantages for mountain hiking:

- Thermal insulation, because of the air trapped in the down and feathers.
Ultra-lightweight: down is lighter than synthetic fill and provides the same warmth. This saves even more weight in your backpack.
- Ultra-compressible.

The advantages of duck down and feather filling

Fill power is a measure of the down’s thermal insulation capacity and potential to trap air. It is expressed in cuin (cubic inches).
Down with higher fill power will take up more space, trap more air, and provide greater thermal insulation.With an 85% down and 15% feather filling, this jacket has a guaranteed fill power of 800 cuin or more (international standard).

Measuring the fill power of down and feather wadding

A fabric’s water repellency is its ability to make water run off its surface without being absorbed.
This prevents the fabric from absorbing water and keeps it lightweight and warm. The fabric in this down jacket is water-repellent, although we recommend you wear a waterproof jacket over top in the rain. The fabric is made water-repellent by treating its outer surface, but the treatment can deteriorate with use. 
We recommend restoring it after each wash.

Water repellency (not to be confused with waterproofing)

This washable down jacket can be worn all winter. But the less you wash it, the longer its thermal insulation and water repellency will last.
 
In short: 
1. Machine wash at 30°C with detergent specially formulated for down or technical garments. Gentle spin cycle.

2. Tumble dry with 2 or 3 tennis balls and repeat 2 or 3 times until it is completely dry.

How to care for down jackets

Once you have cleaned your padded jacket, we recommend using a water-repellent reactivator spray to preserve the hydrophobic properties of the outer fabric. This renews the fabric’s water-repellent properties and optimizes its performance throughout its life cycle.

How do I reactivate the waterproofing properties?

Snags are common when hiking in a padded jacket. Simply mend it or apply an iron-on patch to prevent the tear from getting bigger and letting the synthetic fibres escape.

These pants have water-repellent inserts (front of ankle, buttocks) so water slides off the fabric’s surface. This product is water-repellent, not waterproof.

These water-repellent pants won’t get wet immediately, but they won’t keep you dry under steady rain. For this, we recommend that you wear overpants such as the MT 500 (ref. number 8493660).

The water-repellent properties can be reactivated by putting the pants in the dryer for 10 minutes on low.

Sizing information

Textile dyeing requires a lot of water but also produces wastewater from the dye baths.
To reduce our environmental impact, we used a mass pigmentation process called dope dyeing on the black pants. 
This process incorporates the colour pigments from the initial thread manufacture to reduce water consumption.
In this way, the carbon emissions associated with the manufacturing of these pants were reduced by 30%.

Technical features

Softshell is a high-tech fabric combining three materials: a breathable, windproof membrane sandwiched between a water-repellent outer layer and a warm fleece inner layer. Softshell is warm, breathable, and lightweight. It provides great freedom of movement.

Softshell

An exterior coating makes the fleece more water-resistant. Water runs off the fabric’s surface without being absorbed, keeping the jacket light and dry. This treatment must be reapplied several times throughout the product’s life. Water-repellent treatment products are available in our stores.

Breathability is a fabric’s ability to let the body’s perspiration escape. It is measured by the fabric’s resistance to evaporative heat transfer (RET). The vest’s RET value is 6. RET is a resistance index; the lower the value, the greater the breathability. RET 6–9: extremely breathable; RET 10–13: highly breathable; RET 14–17: breathable; RET 18–20: not very breathable; RET 20+: not breathable.

Breathability and RET index

The clo unit is a measure of thermal resistance (insulation). To determine its clo value, the fleece is exposed to a temperature near body temperature and a controlled external temperature. The higher a material’s clo value, the greater its ability to retain body heat. The greater the clo index, the better the technical fabric will retain your body heat.

Clo index

Protection from the wind is critical, as it can strip heat away from the body, whether you’re active or at rest. The wind chill index measures how the air feels when factoring in the wind and cold. If the temperature is 5°C and wind speed is 30 km/h, the apparent temperature will be 0°C. If the temperature is 0°C and wind speed is 30 km/h, the apparent temperature will be -6°C. The materials used in our products help to counter wind chill.

This vest is padded to keep you warm during cross-country skiing outings.
The synthetic polyester wadding traps a lot of air. Since air is insulating, 
the wadding protects you against the cold. 
Wear this vest over a technical T-shirt or as a second layer in cold weather.

We recommend the three-layer technique. 
Layer 1: A second skin (technical base layer) that wicks away moisture to keep your skin dry.
Layer 2: An insulating layer (T-shirt, fleece) that provides warmth and wicks moisture outwards.
Layer 3: An outer layer (jacket) that protects against the elements (wind, snow, cold).

Adjust the number of layers according to your physical activity and the weather, and make sure that the clothing is breathable.

This cool-weather padded hiking jacket has you covered for a wide range of activities.

The filling of this padded jacket is made from 90% recycled polyester fibres.
For the lining, we use a bi-ton dyeing process, where only every other thread is dyed. This dyed thread is also the result of dope dyeing, which incorporates the colour pigments during the initial thread manufacture to avoid the use of dyeing baths and to reduce our water consumption.
This process can reduce CO2 emissions by 40% compared to traditional dyeing methods.

The model was wearing a synthetic long-sleeved T-shirt and a light fleece underneath. It works with a simulated 5 km/h wind.

Technical information on the filling

The quilted fabric is water-repellent. This means that water rolls off the fabric and does not soak into the padded jacket as quickly. However, the jacket is not waterproof. We recommend wearing a waterproof jacket over the padded jacket in the event of prolonged exposure to rain.

All our gloves are lab-tested on a thermal hand. The temperature ratings (recommended and limit) come from a study carried out with a test panel of 23 walkers exposed to temperatures ranging from 5°C to -20°C and 10 km/h winds. These temperatures are only valid in walking conditions.

How is usage temperature measured?

In the same way you wear several layers of clothing when hiking, you can wear liner gloves under your gloves that will act as a thermal base layer. This multi-layer system enables several layers of air to form around your hands, efficiently insulating them from the cold. 
Remember to wear large enough gloves so your fingers do not become constricted. Compression reduces blood circulation in the fingers.

How to effectively protect your hands from the cold

When active, the body generates heat that is preserved by your clothing’s thermal insulation. If clothing is inadequate, your body cools and circulation to your hands and feet drops to keep your upper body warm. Your clothing can therefore play a role in keeping your hands warm.

How to keep your hands warm with the right clothing

The dexterity of a glove is its ability to handle objects. Our 500 gloves have been rated in a laboratory. The closer the glove’s dexterity is to 5, the more the glove can handle objects in the same way a bare hand can. For example, we tested the 500 gloves for putting on and opening a jacket, handling objects in a bivouac, and eating and drinking.
The 500 gloves have a warmth rating of 4 out of 5.
