All our gloves are lab-tested on a thermal hand. The temperature ratings (recommended and limit) come from a study carried out with a test panel of 23 walkers exposed to temperatures ranging from 5°C to -20°C and 10 km/h winds. These temperatures are only valid in walking conditions.
The 500 gloves have a warmth rating of 1 out of 5. Recommended temperature: 9°C

In the same way you wear several layers of clothing when hiking, you can wear liner gloves under your gloves that will act as a thermal base layer. This multi-layer system enables several layers of air to form around your hands, efficiently insulating them from the cold. 
Remember to wear large enough gloves so your fingers do not become constricted. Compression reduces blood circulation in the fingers.

How to effectively protect your hands from the cold

When active, the body generates heat that is preserved by your clothing’s thermal insulation. If clothing is inadequate, your body cools and circulation to your hands and feet drops to keep your upper body warm. Your clothing can therefore play a role in keeping your hands warm.

How to keep your hands warm with the right clothing

The dexterity of a glove is its ability to handle objects. Our 500 gloves have been rated in a laboratory. The closer the glove’s dexterity is to 5, the more the glove can handle objects in the same way a bare hand can. For example, we tested the 500 gloves for putting on and opening a jacket, handling objects in a bivouac, and eating and drinking.
The 500 gloves have a warmth rating of 4 out of 5.

The 500 stretch gloves are not windproof.
Did you know that the wind makes you feel colder? With an outdoor temperature of 0°C and a 20 km/h wind, the perceived temperature will be -10°C. The windproof components reduce the wind chill.
We recommend buying our Trek 500 waterproof and windproof over-gloves to complement these gloves.

Are these gloves windproof?

Avoid placing them on a heat source to dry. This could damage the fibre and they could lose their shape.
