Our rain ponchos and capes do not have breathable waterproof membranes. This product is therefore recommended for a relaxed walk rather than a fast hike.

Main Material

The fabric for this jacket is water-repellent: water slides off its surface. This keeps the fabric from soaking up water so that the jacket stays lightweight and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. Our water-repellent coatings are now perfluorocarbon-free.

PFC-free water repellency

To maintain water repellency, we recommend regular reactivation. 
Reactivate water repellency after three washes (remember to rinse thoroughly) or after using a dozen times in the rain. 
You can easily reactivate the water repellency properties by warming the fabric: 
- in a dryer for 15 minutes (synthetics cycle) - with a hair dryer, moving back and forth from a distance of 20 cm (8”), twice
- with an iron on the delicate setting and with the steam function off

Long-lasting performance

Rain jacket fabric has a waterproof rating of 2,000 mm.We measure a fabric’s resistance to water pressure in terms of water column height in mm (ISO 811 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. Waterproof material rated 2,000 mm can withstand the pressure exerted by a 2,000 mm column of water (roughly the equivalent of a two-hour shower).

This jacket has been shower-tested at 60 L of water/m²/hr in 1 hr. It protects you from minor downpours, i.e., 6 cm of rain in one hour.
We measure a fabric’s resistance to water pressure, expressed in terms of the height of a water column in mm (based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. Waterproof material rated 2,000 mm can withstand the pressure exerted by a 2,000 mm column of water (roughly the equivalent of a two-hour shower).

Our fabric is extremely breathable – TER 12 
Breathability is measured according to the product’s thermal evaporative resistance. This refers to its capacity to release perspiration during activity. The lower the thermal evaporative resistance (TER), the higher the fabric’s breathability.

TER < 12 = very breathable 
TER < 20 = breathable 
TER > 20 = slightly breathable to not breathable at all.

We changed our water-repellent treatments to exclude perfluorocarbon (PFC) technologies.
PFCs make fabric water-repellent, but are toxic to humans and the environment. By replacing PFCs with other technologies that deliver the same level of performance, we reduce our environmental impact.

How to maintain your jacket’s waterproof coating and long life

This rain jacket has been designed for a two-hour hike at a pace of up to 5 km/h (3 mph), without elevation gain.
How much you perspire depends on the intensity and duration of your physical activity. If the fabric’s breathability is not right for your activity, perspiration will condense inside the jacket. Your clothing will feel damp. This dampness is not rain soaking through, but condensation caused by perspiration. You need to choose a rain jacket that suits your activity. 

For full protection against wind and rain, we recommend NH 500 rain pants too.

Resistance to wear and abrasion test: for example, we test our fleeces in the lab to ensure they do not pill. Colour fastness test: we check colour fastness to ensure colours don’t bleed if they come into contact with saliva. Aging test: repeated washing should not alter the fabric’s properties, performance, thickness, or appearance.
