We display the comfort temperatures that are determined by an independent lab (AITEX) on all our sleeping bags, in accordance with the international standard ISO 23537-1: 2022. 
Comfort temperature is the minimum temperature at which an average person (female, 25 years old, 60 kg [132 lb], 1.60 m [5’3”]) feels comfortable and not cold when they are in a relaxed position.

What is comfort temperature?

The limit temperature rating is the minimum temperature at which an average person (male, 25 years old, 70 kg [154], 1.73 m [5’8”]) is able to sleep in a curled up position without feeling significantly cold.

And, for your information, the extreme temperature is the minimum temperature at which a person can survive (risk of hypothermia) for 6 hours. This is a safety measure, not a comfort measure.

And what is the limit temperature rating?

The protocol for measuring the thermal performance of a sleeping bag is to use a mattress with a thermal resistance corresponding to an R-value of 4.8.If you use a less insulating mattress, the thermal performance of your sleeping bag will be lower.

We therefore recommend that you use an insulating mattress for better thermal comfort.

Weight and dimensions of MT 500 0°C Sleeping Bag sizes

Simply dress in light clothing (one layer, ideally merino wool, is sufficient).
Warm up your extremities with a hat, gloves, socks, and hand/foot warmers if necessary. 
Use a sleeping bag liner to optimize warmth and avoid washing your sleeping bag too often. Choose a mattress with good insulation (R-value > 3).
And here's a little tip: contract your muscles (70% of the energy consumed is converted into heat) and try to keep still—moving around too much will let in cold air.

How do I stay warm in my MT 500 0°C Sleeping Bag?

When hiking, you may get a tear in your sleeping bag! The good news is that it can be repaired.
We recommend using self-adhesive repair patches (ref: 8584596).

If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, we offer a repair service in our Decathlon stores and one of our specialists can apply a heat-bonded patch for you.

How to repair your MT 500 0°C Sleeping Bag

We use 3 layers of overlapping fill:
- two layers of 100 g/m², 100% polyester
- one layer of 80 g/m², 100% polyester 

The insulation is made of silicone-coated spiral fibres that are highly compressible and highly durable.
The trapped air makes the filling insulating and lightweight.

It stays warm even when wet.

Do you want to know more about the wadding?

On the outside, the fabric is 100% polyamide, 38 g/m² fabric weight, 20 denier. This fabric can withstand up to 20,000 abrasion cycles.

Durability is calculated using the Martindale test according to ISO standard 12947-2. This test involves rubbing the bag’s material against another material to assess its abrasion resistance.

The inner lining is made from a 100% polyamide, 20-denier fabric weighing 35 g/m².

Schmerber

This garment has been subjected to a shower test using 60 L of water/sqm/hour for 2 hours. This test reproduces the average conditions of a rain shower in the mountains.
A waterproof rating of 5,000 mm means the fabric can withstand pressure exerted by 5,000 mm of water (the equivalent of a rain shower lasting for two hours).
 Waterproofing is expressed in Schmerbers (for example: 5,000 Schmerbers).

RET refers to a fabric’s capacity to let perspiration evaporate.

Component breathability

Worn as a third layer, this down jacket was certified effective during standardized heat chamber testing to a low of -5°C. The model is wearing a synthetic, long-sleeved shirt and a light fleece underneath. It works with a simulated 5 km/h (3 mph) wind. We also tested this product in static mode; the comfort temperature is 5°C in this case.

How warm is this padded jacket?

The fill power of down has 3 advantages for mountain hiking: 
- Thermal insulation, because of the air trapped in the down and feathers.
- Ultra-lightweight: down wadding is lighter than synthetic and provides the same warmth. This saves more weight in your backpack.
- Ultra-compressible.

The advantages of down and feather filling

Fill power is a measure of the down’s thermal insulation capacity and potential to trap air. It is expressed in cuin (cubic inches). Down with higher fill power will take up more space, trap more air, and provide greater thermal insulation. This jacket is filled with 90% down and 10% feathers and has a guaranteed fill power of 800 cuin (international standard) or more. 

Measuring the fill power of down and feather filling

This fabric is water-repellent. Water repellency keeps the fabric lightweight and warm. It is recommended to wear a waterproof jacket over top in the rain. Treatment on the outer surface achieves water repellency, but the treatment can deteriorate with use. We recommend restoring it after each wash.

Water repellency (different from waterproofing)

This washable down jacket can be worn all winter. But the less you wash it, the longer its thermal insulation and water repellency will last.
Care instructions: 
1. Machine wash at 30°C with detergent specially formulated for down or technical garments. Use a gentle spin cycle. 
2. Tumble dry with 2 or 3 tennis balls; repeat 2 or 3 times until completely dry.

How to care for down jackets

After washing, we recommend using a water-repellent spray to prevent water absorption. This renews water-repellent properties and improves performance throughout the garment’s life cycle.

Restoring water repellency

Snags are common during hikes. The good news is that it can be repaired to prevent further tearing and to stop feathers from escaping. Need help repairing? Don’t worry! Some Decathlon workshops offer in-store repairs and can repair your jacket using an iron-on patch.

The JIS L 1099 B1 test measures the water vapour that passes through the fabric in 24 h, in grams per square metre. The higher this value, the more breathable the fabric. A performance rating of 15,000 g/m²/24 h, corresponding to a highly breathable fabric, is ideal for mountain hiking.

Jacket fit

The membrane acts like a smart filter: it blocks water from the outside while allowing sweat to escape. Integrated between the inner and outer layers, it guarantees durability and lasting performance so you can face the unpredictable mountain weather with confidence.

What is a membrane?

Do up the zippers, turn the jacket inside out, and machine-wash it at 30°C. Use a smaller dose of detergent (preferably one specifically for waterproof clothing) to avoid residues. Rinse again and gently wring out to protect the jacket.

How to wash your jacket

Traditional waterproof jackets keep you dry on the outside, but trap moisture on the inside due to a lack of breathability. This jacket avoids this pitfall thanks to its extremely breathable fabric and side openings that effectively wick away perspiration while you hike.

Why use a ripstop fabric?

The Schmerber measures the resistance to water pressure: the higher the value, the more waterproof the fabric. With a rating of 20,000 mm H2O (Schmerbers), this jacket can withstand a water column of 20 m and guarantees optimal protection, even in heavy rain.

What are Schmerbers?

Height-adjustable hood with an elastic cord and drawstring. The built-in semi-rigid visor provides optimal protection. Added extra: Triangular opening on the side of the hood to improve lateral visibility.

How much extra warmth do these glove liners provide?

All our gloves are lab- tested on a thermal hand to determine their warmth. The results are based on a study carried out on a panel of 23 testers walking in temperatures ranging from 10°C to -20°C with a wind speed of 10 km/h. These temperature ratings are only valid in walking conditions.
