Use
Screw the spike into the sand in its entirety (only the handles should be sticking out of the sand), then insert the beach umbrella base and tighten the fastening screw. Check that stand is secure in windy weather. If not, do not use.Do not use in soil or ground other than sand.

Used to drill into ground to hold a parasol to protect from strong light at a festival. Used a little bit of water on the ground to help get it started but did a lovely job in being secure.
