We perform comparative studies in a thermal laboratory in walking conditions with light winds (5 km/h or 3 mph). This is how we measure the thermal resistance of our boots. Everyone feels the cold differently.Comfort temperature: Felt slightly cold and 70% of users experienced thermal comfort in the boots.
Limit temperature: Felt extremely cold and 10% of users found experienced thermal comfort in the boots.

Are these boots warm enough for winter hikes?

These boots have a membrane to guarantee waterproofing and breathability. A membrane is a very fine component (5 to 25 micrometres) on the inside of a fabric that prevents water from entering, but allows moisture to escape.

How do these boots protect from outdoor conditions?

We made sure that your boots are waterproof by conducting lab tests to simulate walking with the boots half-submerged in water. We also conducted field tests to measure wear and aging. 

Are my boots 100% waterproof?

This product was lab-tested by our engineers to ensure your total satisfaction. We tested the following elements: tear resistance of eyelets and straps, bonding, toxicology, abrasion resistance of outsole and upper components, and accelerated aging.

Will my boots withstand regular use over the long term?

Follow these principles for your winter activities. 
Warmth: wear warm socks (ideally with a good percentage of wool).
 Breathability: choose socks based on the intensity of the hike and, to minimize moisture, make sure they’re breathable.
Boot height: the height of the sock should correspond to the height of the boot—for more protection, choose higher socks.

How do I choose the right footwear for hiking in the snow?

Water repellency is a fabric’s capacity to make water run off its surface without being absorbed. It prevents the fabric from soaking up water, keeping it lightweight, warm, and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. This treatment needs to be reapplied throughout the product’s lifetime. Products for this purpose (spray or liquid) are available in our stores.

How to preserve the technical qualities of the boots

Boots can get wet from condensation and perspiration.
If your boots are very wet, remove the insole, fill the upper with balls of newspaper, and change the newspaper regularly. The paper will absorb the moisture and dry them faster.
Never put the boots too close to a heat source. Leave them in a warm, dry, and ventilated place.

The resistance of a fabric is measured by the height of a water column in mm that can be supported by the fabric (test based on the ISO 1092 standard).The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. A component with an impermeability of 5,000 mm will therefore withstand the pressure exerted by 5,000 mm of water (which corresponds roughly to a 1-hour downpour). Waterproofing is expressed in Schmerber units (for example: 5,000 Schmerbers). This number applies before washing.

Component waterproofing

A coating applied to the fabric makes it waterproof and windproof. Technically, a waterproof fabric is also windproof. Protection from the wind is critical, as wind can chill the body during physical activity.

Component breathability is measured by its thermal evaporative resistance (RET). 
This allows perspiration to escape during physical activity, preventing it from accumulating on the skin. 
The lower the RET, the more breathable the fabric.

Tested both in the lab and in the field, the waterproofing and breathability of this footwear are guaranteed. The shoe is first immersed in water while internal air pressure is applied to check that no bubbles form on its surface. Next, the shoes are fitted to a mechanical arm that simulates walking, half immersed in water to ensure that the inside remains perfectly dry. For this model, the test lasted the equivalent of 8 km (5 miles) under the conditions mentioned above.

Waterproofing test

A shoe’s waterproofing is often undermined by water getting in from the top of the shoe. To keep your feet dry for as long as possible, we recommend using a gaiter or mini waterproof gaiter to keep out water, stones, and sand. We recommend spraying your shoes with waterproof spray several times a year to restore the original water-repellent properties and prevent stains.
