Features of the MT 500 5°C Sleeping Bag

Ergonomic hood with a drawstring. Double collar prevents heat from escaping. A baffle along the zipper prevents heat loss. Double-slider zipper for breathability. Inside pocket.

How can I keep warm in the MT 500 5°C Sleeping Bag?

Dress lightly (1 layer of clothing, ideally made from merino wool). If needed, wear a hat, gloves, and socks, and use hand warmers. Use a sleeping bag liner to keep heat in. Avoid over-washing. Choose a mattress with good insulation (R-value >3). Tip: contract your muscles (70% of the energy consumed is converted into heat), but avoid moving as this can create a draft.

How to repair the MT 500 5°C Sleeping Bag

Your sleeping bag may tear on a hike. It happens! The good news is that it can be repaired. To do this, we recommend self-adhesive repair patches (ref: 8584596). If you don’t feel comfortable doing this yourself, a heat-bonded patching service is available at the workshop of your Decathlon store.

Do you want to know more about the wadding?

We use 3 overlapping layers of 60 g/m2, 100% polyester wadding for the top and bottom of the sleeping bag. The wadding is made from silicone-coated spiral fibres that are highly compressible and durable. The trapped air makes the filling highly insulating and lightweight. It stays warm even when wet.

How durable is fabric of the MT 500 5°C Sleeping Bag?

On the outside, the fabric is 100% polyamide, 38 g/m² fabric weight, 20 denier. This fabric can withstand up to 20,000 abrasion cycles. Durability is calculated using the Martindale test according to ISO standard 12947-2. This test involves rubbing the bag’s material against another material to assess its abrasion resistance. The inner lining is made from a 100% polyamide, 20-denier fabric weighing 35 g/m2.

What is the comfort rating?

All our sleeping bags display the temperature ratings and are tested by an independent lab (AITEX), in accordance with ISO 23537-1 standard. The comfort temperature is the lower limit at which the user is in general thermal equilibrium, feeling neither too cold nor too hot (for an average person in normal conditions). Use this rating to choose the right sleeping bag for you.

What is the lower temperature limit?

The comfort temperature is the lower limit at which the user is in general thermal equilibrium, neither too cold nor too hot (for an average person in normal conditions of use).

An important clarification concerning the ISO 23537-1 standard

In the context of this standard, the measurement protocol of a sleeping bag’s thermal protection uses a mattress with thermal resistance equal to an R-value of 4.8. This means that when using a less insulating mattress, the thermal performance of your sleeping bag will be lower. Use an insulating mattress to optimize your thermal comfort.

Nowhere near warm enough

The description says it's good down to 5C. If you combine it with a liner, a blanket and keep your clothes on you might stay warm. Probably good for about 15C. The material is incredibly slippy so you'll slide off your mattress all night.
