Choosing a UV-protection shirt (part 1)
All of our UV-resistant T-shirts are UPF 50+, providing maximum sun protection! They have various sleeve lengths and can suit different water sports. That said, our line was primarily designed to meet the specific needs of surfers.
Choose your T-shirt based on the duration of your surf session: 1 hour, 2 hours, or 3 hours.
Choosing a UV-protection shirt (part 2)
1 hour: Occasional practice. Choose between a loose fit (easy to put on, comfortable when dry) and a tight fit (comfortable when wet). Loops connect the shirt to your shorts to keep everything in place.
2 hours: Regular practice. Seamless panels under the arms ensure comfort when wet, and the drawstring keeps your shirt in place.
3 hours: Intensive practice. Warmer so you can stay in the water for longer.
UV protection even when wet.
This Olaian T-shirt blocks at least 98% of UVB rays and 95% of UVA rays (UPF 50+), guaranteeing effective sun protection. Ideal for water sports, it can be worn in or out of the water. The shirt’s dense fibres filter out UV rays for long-lasting protection, even after washing. Caution: The material’s elastane may deteriorate in chlorinated water.
What does UPF 50+ mean?
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is an international standard that measures the proportion of UV rays a fabric lets through to your skin. A UPF of 50+ means that the fabric blocks at least 98% of UVB rays and 95% of UVA rays.
Reduced chafing
This UV-resistant rash guard helps minimize irritation due to contact with your surfboard or bodyboard. It can also be worn under a wetsuit to limit chafing around the neck and armpits. Shown to reduce chafing from paddling movements during one-hour sessions. If you plan to surf for more than one hour, our 500 UV rash guard with seamless underarm panels is a better choice.
Stay-in-place waistband
This rash guard has a front loop that attaches to the cord of your swim shorts to keep it from riding up while you surf. Ideal for sessions of up to one hour. For more than one hour, we recommend that you choose the UV top 500, which also has a drawstring at the hips for better stability. A rash guard can cause irritation on the lower abdomen if it rides up.
Warmth and wind
This UV-protection T-shirt is recommended for use in water temperatures of 22°C and up. Air temperature may increase or decrease this recommendation. Our thermal models (over 2 hours) are made of fleece and/or neoprene. We recommend our neoprene model in conditions with winds in excess of 15 km/h.
Suitable for multiple water sports
Our UV T-shirts meet the needs of the most demanding surfers. The design is compatible with many other water sports, including swimming, kitesurfing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, water skiing, and stand up paddle boarding.
Sun exposure advice
UV-protection tops are great, but they don’t offer total sun protection. Consider other factors, such as reflections (from water, sand, etc.), heat, time of day, etc. Wearing this T-shirt is just one part of staying safe in the sun. You should also wear sunglasses and a hat or cap, apply sunscreen regularly, and drink water.
