Grippy soles.
We used a special rubber formulation to optimize the grip and traction of this sole. We find the best balance to ensure the shoes are good for hiking on both muddy ground (grip) and dry ground (traction).
Designed for hiking
Our hiking shoes are designed for use on hiking trails. We choose the sole and upper components for our footwear and test them to ensure that they’re perfectly suited for walking on unpaved trails, such as forest paths, and rocky trails, such as coastal paths. Wearing them on paved roads could lead to premature wear and discomfort. They’re not suitable for mountain hiking.
Waterproofing test
These shoes are laboratory- and field-tested and have a membrane to ensure that they are optimally waterproof and breathable. The shoe is first immersed in water while internal air pressure is applied to check that no bubbles form on its surface. Next, the shoes are placed on a mechanical arm that simulates walking and are half immersed in water to test that the insides remain perfectly dry.
Measuring waterproofness
The NH 150 shoes are waterproof for up to two hours of hiking.
They have been laboratory tested up to 2,000 flexes. Once the shoes are dry, they become waterproof once again.
We tested three levels of waterproofing:
- 2,000 flexes or approximately 2 hours of hiking.
- 4,000 flexes or approximately 4 hours of hiking.
- 8,000 flexes or approximately 8 hours of hiking.
Durability testing
The following aspects were tested in the lab: tear resistance of eyelets and straps, bonding, toxicology, UV resistance, abrasion resistance of the outsole and upper components, and accelerated aging. We use these tests to improve the quality of our products and prevent the premature wear of our hiking shoes.
Extending the life of your shoes
We recommend that you use a waterproofing spray on your shoes several times a year to restore their water-repellent properties and prevent staining.
Which socks work well with NH 150 waterproof shoes?
These shoes are somewhat breathable, but not enough to release all of the moisture created by your sweat. We recommend that you wear them with Hike 100 mid socks: they are made with moisture-absorbing cotton and have a reverse terry-knit structure underneath that wicks moisture away from your feet. They’re also high enough to protect your ankles. High socks reduce the chance of blisters.
