Main component 

A product’s waterproof rating depends on two key criteria: component and construction. 
This product was made with a membrane.
The membrane is a kind of very thin plastic film (polyurethane) that makes the component waterproof and breathable. 
It is flexible, lightweight, and breathable.

Membrane

3-layer design: The membrane is glued between the outer and inner fabric. We use it for durable, high-performing jackets.

Laboratory tests are conducted to guarantee the waterproof rating of a component. The resistance of a fabric is measured by the height of a water column in mm that can be supported by the fabric (test based on the ISO 1092 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. 
This product’s component has a 25,000 mm waterproof rating and can withstand the pressure of a 25,000 mm water column. 
This is equivalent to 25,000 Schmerbers.

Component waterproofing

We conduct laboratory tests that simulate rainfall to guarantee the jacket’s waterproof rating.  This product was validated in a shower test under 30 cm of rain for 3 hours. This test reproduces the average conditions of a mountain storm.

Jacket waterproofing

Component breathability is measured by its thermal evaporative resistance (RET). 
This allows perspiration to escape during physical activity, preventing it from accumulating on the skin. 
The lower the RET, the more breathable the fabric. 

RET ≤ 6: very breathable fabric 
RET ≤ 12: breathable fabric 
RET ≤ 20: not very breathable fabric 
This product as a RET of 6.

In addition to breathability, Quechua develops technical solutions (zippers, air vents, mesh, etc.) to improve the overall ventilation of its hiking products.  
These ventilation systems regulate the temperature inside the garment while also helping to eliminate perspiration generated during physical activity.

Jacket breathability

A fabric is water-repellent when water slides off its surface without being absorbed. Because the fabric doesn’t soak up water, it remains lightweight and breathable.Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. This treatment needs to be reapplied throughout the product’s lifetime. Water repellency can be reactivated by putting the item in the dryer for 10 minutes on low heat.
You can also use the waterproof spray (ref.: 8554908).

How to restore water repellency

By conducting audits and having teams on site, we make sure that the working environment of the employees meets certain quality standards in terms of human respect, personal fulfilment, and environmental protection.

Working conditions in our production workshops

Our Quechua global design centre is based in Passy, at the foot of Mont Blanc in Haute-Savoie, France. This location makes it a real meeting place for our teams and outdoor sports enthusiast. It’s the perfect spot for designing our mountain hiking products.
