The waterproofness of a fabric, provided by a coating or membrane, is measured in Schmerbers or mm (pressure exerted by a column of water). The higher this number, the more waterproof the fabric. 
This jacket is designed with a waterproof coating: this component resists 5,000 mm of water (Schmerbers) before washing (equivalent to the pressure exerted by a 5,000 mm column of water).

Water resistance of the fabric

The fabric of this jacket is water-repellent, i.e., water runs off its surface without being absorbed. This keeps the fabric from soaking up water so the jacket stays lightweight and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. The main seams are also taped.

Our fabric is extremely breathable (RET 12). 
Breathability is measured according to the product’s thermal evaporative resistance. This refers to its capacity to release perspiration during activity. The lower the thermal evaporative resistance (RET), the higher the fabric’s breathability.

Fabric breathability

To maintain water repellency, we recommend regular reactivation.
Reactivate water repellency after three washes (remember to rinse thoroughly) or after using a dozen times in the rain.
You can reactivate the water repellency properties by warming the fabric: 
- in a dryer for 15 min. (synthetic cycle) - with a hair dryer, held 20 cm away from the fabric, moving back and forth twice over each section 
- with an iron on the delicate setting, steam function off, passing over each section twice

How to maintain the water resistance of your jacket over time

When we’re active, how much we perspire depends on the intensity and duration of the effort.If the fabric’s breathability is not right for your type of activity, sweat condenses inside the jacket.You will feel damp:This moisture is not rain soaking through the shell but condensation caused by perspiration.You need to choose your jacket according to the type of physical activity.This jacket is designed for the occasional one-day hike at a speed of 5 km/h.

Sweat is part of physical activity, so it’s important to regulate moisture as best you can. If your shoe is breathable, it will wick away moisture more easily, so you can choose an absorbent and ventilated sock. If your shoes are relatively waterproof, you’ll want to make a different choice: you need a sock that will absorb and wick perspiration away.

For this sock, we offer 2 different heights. Medium/Mid-height socks protect your ankles and stop just above them. Ideally, they’re worn with shoes with low uppers.  The Tall/High socks are worn ideally with medium or high upper shoes, as they stop just below the calf and cover your ankle completely.

Thanks to your feedback, we improved the design of the 10 litre Arpenaz NH 50 Hiking Backpack.
We added a double zipper on the main compartment and a larger pocket bottom on the outside pocket. The aim is to not lose your belongings when opening your bag. 
And of course, the price hasn’t increased!

The volume of each backpack is measured using a standardized method: the main compartment and all the pockets are filled with little balls. These balls are then emptied into a graduated container to get the equivalent volume in litres.

How is volume measured?

Put heavy items at the bottom. Pack your clothes around these items. Keep your waterproof jacket and/or fleece in an easy-to-access location. Place small frequently used items in the pockets (sunscreen, map, glasses, etc.). 

How to pack your backpack

At Decathlon, all of our Quechua backpacks are guaranteed for 10 years against normal product wear and tear. In the case of a defect, we recommend its repair, replacement, or a refund. The guarantee covers the components from the zip to the seams: more information can be found on our website.

The following components were validated in the lab: fabric, buckles, straps, foam, and zippers. For example, we test the fabric’s resistance to abrasion and tearing, colourfastness, and waterproofing. We also check the resistance of the construction using a dummy that reproduces a hiker’s movements to replicate several years of wear and tear.

How to adjust your backpack

The water-repellent components allow you to continue walking or hiking in light rain for short periods. Note: This backpack is not watertight or waterproof and does not come with a rain cover.

- Clean off mud: remove dry mud with a hard brush,

What is the weight of a sandal?

To find the right sandal, try on several different sizes and models. Ultimately go for a snug-fitting size to avoid rubbing when going downhill, and always ensure your heels remain well-supported, to prevent the foot from moving around in the sandal.

To determine a fabric’s breathability, we test its evaporative resistance or RET (based on the ISO 11092 standard). The lower the fabric’s resistance, the more perspiration can escape, and the higher the fabric’s breathability.

RET > 20: little or non-breathable fabric.

The fabric for this jacket is water-repellent: water slides off its surface. In this way, the fabric doesn’t soak up water and stays lightweight and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. Our water-repellent coatings are now perfluorocarbon-free. As a result, this model will be sold with a more environmentally friendly water-repellent treatment.

This dampness is not rain soaking through but condensation caused by perspiration. This means you need to choose top-layer pants suitable for your activity.This product is designed for 2-hour hikes at no more than 5 km/h (3 mph).

All our gloves are lab-tested on a thermal hand. The temperature ratings (recommended and limit) come from a study with a test panel of 23 walkers exposed to temperatures ranging from 5°C to -20°C and 10 km/h (6 mph) winds. These temperature ratings are only valid in walking conditions.
The MT 900 Gloves have a warmth rating of 3 out of 5. Recommended temperature: -5°C

How is usage temperature measured?

Just like you wear several layers of clothing when hiking, you can wear liner gloves under your gloves that will act as a thermal base layer. This multi-layer system enables pockets of air to form around your hands, efficiently insulating them from the cold. Remember to wear large enough gloves so your fingers do not become constricted. Compression reduces blood circulation in the fingers.

The sole design is the result of extensive research conducted in our labs. It is composed of a specific rubber formula that optimizes grip and traction. We are systematically looking for the best compromise for walking on soft (e.g., forest paths) and stony (e.g., coastal paths) hiking trails.
Wearing them on paved roads can lead to the premature wear of your boots and cause discomfort. They’re not suitable for mountain hiking.

Resistant soles for hiking trails

The NH 100 Hiking Shoes have been tested for 2,000 flexes in the laboratory. They are waterproof for 2 hours of hiking. 
We tested 3 levels of waterproofing:
- 2,000 flexes, about 2 hours of hiking
- 4,000 flexes, about 4 hours of hiking
- 8,000 flexes, about 8 hours of hiking
Use a re-waterproofing spray several times a year to reactivate the original water repellency and limit stains. 

Waterproof for 2 hours of hiking in rainy weather

These shoes are laboratory- and field-tested and have a membrane to ensure that they are optimally waterproof and breathable. The shoe is first immersed in water while internal air pressure is applied to check that no bubbles form on its surface. Next, the shoes are placed on a mechanical arm that simulates walking and half immersed in water to test that the insides remain perfectly dry.

How do you test the waterproofing of the shoes?

With your feedback, we improved the design of the NH 100 Hiking Shoes. The new version features an EVA interlayer sole (ethylene vinyl acetate) that cushions against stones underfoot to improve comfort.

Try on both shoes, standing up, wearing your hiking socks. Try on several models or sizes if necessary. Check two comfort points: 
- the heel seating
- the front of the foot on a downward slope
Avoid any pressure points when fitting.Walk around to test the comfort and support.   Break your shoes in gradually during your first few hiking trips.
