How is usage temperature measured?

Optimize insulation by applying the layering principle. Wearing liner gloves in addition to gloves creates several air pockets that effectively insulate your hands from the cold. The gloves must be big enough not to compress your fingers. This is because compression slows down blood flow in the fingers, which prevents them from staying warm.

A long inner flap beneath the zipper keeps cold air out. The toggle at the hem ensures your parka is comfortable.

Is my parka warm enough for winter hikes?

The parka has a waterproof material that keeps out water and wind. To stay warm in winter, you must also protect your extremities (head, hands, and feet). The hood (with removable synthetic fur), cuffs, and stand-up collar all keep out the cold. The comfortable, fleece-lined handwarmer pockets protect your hands.

How does this parka protect you from outdoor conditions?

The waterproofness of a jacket isn’t just limited to its components: the assembly technique also makes a difference.
Whether heat-sealed or sewn then waterproofed, this parka’s overall waterproofness is measured using a shower test developed by Decathlon, which simulates rain of different intensities.
This waterproof parka protects you from a downpour, i.e., 12 cm of rain in 2 hours.

Waterproofness

The waterproofness of a fabric, provided by a coating or membrane, is measured in Schmerber or mm water (pressure exerted by a column of water). The higher this number, the more waterproof the fabric. 
This product has a waterproof fabric resistant to 15,000 mm water (Schmerber) before washing.

Durability tests are conducted on selected components: resistance to rubbing and abrasion, colourfastness, and resistance to repeated washing. All these tests have been conducted on the jacket material.

Will this parka withstand regular use long-term?

Water repellency is a fabric’s capacity to make water run off its surface without being absorbed. It prevents the fabric from soaking up water, keeping it lightweight, warm, and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. The garment should be retreated over its lifespan (recommended after each wash). Products for this purpose (spray or liquid) are available in our stores.

How to preserve the technical qualities of your parka

Whatever your cold-weather activity, use the three-layer technique:
Layer 1: A high-tech base layer to wick moisture away from the body and keep your skin dry.
 Layer 2: A fleece jacket or sweater to provide warmth and transfer moisture outward.
 Layer 3: A jacket to protect against the elements (rain, snow, and wind). 
To eliminate moisture, the whole outfit must be breathable.

Compression reduces blood circulation in the fingers.

Dexterity refers to your ability to handle objects while wearing gloves. Our MT 500 Hiking Gloves have been rated in a laboratory. The closer the glove’s dexterity is to 5, the easier it is to handle objects while wearing gloves. We pay special attention to comfort when designing our products. 
The back, straps, and handle are comfortable because of their thickness and construction. They are made of different types of foam padding covered with a 3D mesh to improve ventilation and drying. Back: 5 pads made from 2 types of foam (PE/PU), 15 mm thick.

The backpack’s water-repellent components allow you to continue walking or hiking in light rain for short periods. Note: This backpack is not watertight or waterproof and does not come with a rain cover.

Waterproofing

The volume of each backpack is measured using a standardized method: the main compartment and all the pockets are filled with little balls. These balls are then emptied into a graduated container to get the equivalent volume in litres.
The capacity of the main volume of this bag is 16 L.
We also measured the volume with the 2 side water bottle pockets, which increase the total capacity to 17 L.

How is volume measured?

Laboratory tests are conducted on the components and assemblies to ensure the backpack withstands use over time.
For example, tests are performed on the fabric’s resistance to abrasion and tearing, and waterproofing. 
We use these tests to guarantee the bags for 10 years from the date of purchase.

Place the heavy items (laptop, lunch bag, etc.) at the bottom and in the spaces provided. Pack your clothes around these items. Put small items that you frequently use (e.g., sunscreen, map, sunglasses) in the pockets. Put your water bottle(s) in the outer side pockets.
