Membrane

A product’s waterproof rating depends on two key criteria: component and construction. This product was made with a membrane. The membrane is a kind of very thin plastic film (polyurethane) that makes the component waterproof and breathable. It is flexible, lightweight, and breathable.

Layer design

2.5-layer design: The membrane is glued beneath the outer fabric and protected on the inside with a thin film. This technique is used for light jackets.

Component waterproofing

Laboratory tests are conducted to guarantee the waterproof rating of a component. We measure a fabric’s resistance to a column of water in mm (based on the ISO 1092 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. This product’s component has a 15,000-mm waterproof rating and can withstand the pressure of a 15,000-mm water column. This is also equivalent to 15,000 Schmerbers.

Jacket waterproofing

We conduct laboratory tests that simulate rainfall to guarantee the product’s waterproof rating. This garment was subjected to a shower test using 60 litres of water/m²/hour for 2 hours. This test reproduces average rain shower conditions in the mountains.

Breathability

Component breathability is measured by its thermal evaporative resistance (RET). This allows perspiration to escape during physical activity, preventing it from accumulating on the skin. The lower the RET, the more breathable the fabric. RET ≤ 6: very breathable fabric RET ≤ 12: breathable fabric RET ≤ 20: not very breathable fabric This product has a RET of 10.

How to restore water repellency

A fabric is water-repellent when water slides off its surface without being absorbed. Because the fabric doesn’t soak up water, it remains lightweight and breathable.Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. This treatment needs to be reapplied throughout the product’s lifetime. Water repellency can be reactivated by putting the item in the dryer for 10 minutes on low heat. You can also use a waterproofing spray (ref.: 8554908).
