This means that the fabric does not soak up water, and therefore remains lightweight, breathable and warm. A fabric becomes water repellent by applying a treatment to its outer surface regularly (we recommend every three washes).

We carry out comparative studies in a thermal laboratory in walking conditions with low wind (5 km/h). This is how we measure the thermal resistance of our boots. However, every individual feels the cold differently. Comfort temperature: felt slightly cold and 70% of users find the thermal sensation acceptable on their feet.
Limit temperature: felt very cold and 10% of users consider the thermal sensation acceptable on their feet.

Will these boots be warm enough for your child’s winter hikes?

These boots have a membrane to guarantee waterproofing and breathability. A membrane is a very thin component applied to the inner surface of the fabric that prevents water from entering while allowing moisture to escape.
We tested this product in a laboratory simulating walking with the feet half immersed.
This shoe model was tested for up to 8,000 flexes, equivalent to 16 km of walking.

Are my boots 100% waterproof?

The material and tread of SnowContact soles are specifically designed for optimal grip and traction on snow. SnowContact soles are more effective on snow than traditional soles. When walking on ice, adding crampons to your boots is the only way to ensure optimum safety.

What are the advantages of SnowContact technology?

This product was lab-tested by our engineers to ensure your total satisfaction. We tested the following elements: tear resistance of eyelets and straps, bonding, toxicology, UV resistance, abrasion resistance of outsole and upper components, and accelerated aging.

Will my boots withstand regular use in the long term?

To stay warm when hiking in the winter, we recommend: 
Warmth: wear warm socks (ideally with a good percentage of wool).
Breathability: choose socks based on the intensity of the hike and, to minimize moisture, make sure they’re breathable.
Boot height: the height of your socks should correspond to the height of the boot—for more protection, choose higher socks.

How do I choose the right footwear for hiking in the snow?

Water repellency is a fabric’s capacity to make water run off its surface without being absorbed. It prevents the fabric from soaking up water, keeping it lightweight, warm, and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. This treatment needs to be reapplied throughout the product’s lifetime. Products for this purpose (spray or liquid) are available in our stores.

How to preserve the technical qualities of the boots

Boots can become heavy if you wear them in wet conditions (through condensation and perspiration).
If your boots are very wet, remove the insole and fill the upper with balls of newspaper, changing them regularly. The paper will absorb the moisture and the boots will dry faster.
Never place your boots too close to a heat source. Leave them in a warm, dry, and ventilated place.

Are my boots warm enough for winter hikes?

Your boots have a membrane to guarantee waterproofing and breathability. A membrane is a very fine component (5 to 25 micrometres) affixed to the inside of a fabric that prevents water from entering but allows moisture to escape.

How do my boots protect me from outdoor conditions?

- Allow to dry away from a heat source. 
- On dry leather, brush with a stiff brush (horsehair and brass fibres) to remove mud and dirt.
- Use a crepe brush or nubuck eraser to remove stains.
For stubborn stains, clean with a brush and a little warm water and leave to dry.
- Brush again with a stiff brush.
- Spray a waterproofing product. This will give a shine to the leather and brighten up the colour.

How to care for nubuck leather shoes

Thermal comfort is a balance between warmth and breathability. Too much heat or not enough breathability lets moisture accumulate and cold set in. Designed with your activities in mind, this membrane prevents water infiltration on one side and lets moisture escape on the other.

Breathable boots for optimal thermal comfort

We made sure that your boots are waterproof by conducting laboratory tests that simulate walking with the boots half-submerged in water. We also conducted field tests to measure wear and aging. We tested 3 levels of waterproofing: 2,000 flexes (approx. 4 km/2.5 mile walk), 4,000 flexes (approx. 8 km/5 mile walk) and 8,000 flexes (approx. 16 km/10 mile walk). This boot has been tested for up to 4,000 flexes, equivalent to an 8-km (5-mile) hike.

The boot’s traction depends on the number and shape of the lugs. The grip depends on the materials of the sole and the tread pattern, like car tires. Traction optimizes propulsion, prevents slipping when going uphill, and stabilizes the boot. 
Grip prevents the boot from slipping and skidding on smooth ground or in demanding conditions (rain, snow, and ice).

What is the difference between traction and grip?

The material and tread of Snow Contact soles are specifically designed for optimal grip and traction. Snow Contact soles are more effective on snow than traditional soles. When walking on ice, adding anti-slip crampons to your boots is the only way to ensure optimum safety.

Wind protection is very important because of the significant chilling effect wind can have on the body, whether you are active or at rest.According to the wind chill model, which measures how the air temperature feels when factoring in the wind and cold: a temperature of 5°C with a 30 km/h wind feels like 0°C, and a temperature of 0°C with a 30 km/h wind feels like -6°C. The materials used help to counter the chilling effects of the wind.

Water-repellent properties

the membrane is a polyurethane layer sandwiched between the softshell jacket’s inner and outer fabrics. It protects you from the wind, ensuring your body heat doesn’t escape. This membrane is also breathable: it wicks perspiration to the outside of the garment through its microscopic pores, preventing moisture build-up and keeping you warm and dry!

These shoes are made for running, hiking, climbing, jumping, and playing.

Sole design that has been the subject of extensive research in our laboratories, combined with a specific rubber formulation to optimize grip and traction. Because all needs are different, we always strive for the best balance between muddy and dry terrain.

Let your child try on both boots, standing up, wearing their hiking socks. Try on several models or sizes if necessary. Check the following two areas of comfort: the heel and the front of the foot when going downhill. There should be no pressure points. Have your child walk around the store. Gradually increase the length of time they wear the shoes during initial walks to break the shoes in.

Purchasing advice

For hiking, consider choosing one size up from your usual size to ensure optimal comfort when heading downhill and to prevent your toes from hitting the front of the shoes. Advice: keep your nails short and, before heading downhill, check that your lacing prevents your feet from sliding towards the front of the shoes.

Which size should you choose?

The shoes' waterproofing is often compromised by water getting in from the collar. So to keep your feet dry longer, it's advisable to use waterproof gaiters or mini-gaiters that will keep out water as well as pebbles, sand, etc. Using a waterproofing spray several times a year is recommended. This restores the original water repellent properties and prevents staining.

Making waterproofing last longer

Footwear waterproofing test: lab- and field-tested, shoes with a breathable, waterproof membrane ensure optimal rain protection. The shoe is immersed in water while internal air pressure is applied to check that no bubbles form on its surface. They are half immersed while on a mechanical arm that simulates walking: we then check that the inside of the shoe remains perfectly dry.

Waterproofing test

During the waterproofing test, we test 3 levels of waterproofing, i.e. 2000 flexes (about 2 hours of walking), 4000 flexes (about 4 hours of walking), and 8000 flexes (about 8 hours of walking). The kids' Crossrock waterproof shoe is waterproof for 4000 flexes.
