Is my parka warm enough for winter hikes?

This parka was developed for winter conditions such as intense cold, snow, and storms. Insulation is provided by the thick synthetic wadding that traps air (double layer on the body and single layer at the arms). A long inner flap beneath the zipper keeps cold air out. The system is supplemented by a drawstring at the hem.

How does this parka protect you from outdoor conditions?

The parka has a waterproof material that keeps out water and wind. To stay warm in winter, you must also protect your extremities (head, hands, and feet). The storm-proof hood’s detachable synthetic fur, wrist cuffs, and high collar keep out the cold. The comfortable, fleece-lined handwarmer pockets protect your hands.

Parka waterproofness

The waterproofness of a parka isn’t just limited to its components: the assembly technique also makes a difference. Whether heat-sealed or sewn then waterproofed, this parka’s overall waterproofness is measured using a shower test developed by Decathlon, which simulates rain of different intensities. This waterproof parka protects you from a downpour, i.e., 12 cm of rain in 2 hours.

Component waterproofing

The waterproofness of a fabric, provided by a coating or membrane, is measured in Schmerber or mm water (pressure exerted by a column of water). The higher this number, the more waterproof the fabric. This product has a waterproof fabric resistant to 15,000 mm water or Schmerber before washing.

A practical parka with smart details

Practical, smart details: 2 hand warmer pockets, 2 outside pockets with flap, 1 secure inside pocket, and 2 inside mesh pockets to keep everything handy. The main zipper has a long zipper pull and snaps as well as a thumb loop so you can open or close your jacket while keeping your hands snug in your gloves. The 2 zippers at the bottom of the parka allow you to easily bend or sit down comfortably.

This parka is designed to be worn with a warm second layer like a fleece or a light down jacket. The longline style is ideal for protecting you from the cold and wind during winter hikes in open, hilly areas or in the mountains.

Will this parka withstand regular use long-term?

Durability tests are conducted on selected components: resistance to rubbing and abrasion, colourfastness, and resistance to repeated washing. All these tests have been conducted on the jacket material.

How to preserve the technical qualities of your parka

Water repellency is a fabric’s capacity to make water run off its surface without being absorbed. It prevents the fabric from soaking up water, keeping it lightweight, warm, and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. The garment should be retreated over its lifespan (recommended after each wash). Products for this purpose (spray or liquid) are available in our stores.

How to dress properly for hiking in cold weather

Whatever your cold-weather activity, use the three-layer technique: Layer 1: A high-tech base layer to wick moisture away from the body and keep your skin dry. Layer 2: A fleece jacket or sweater to provide warmth and transfer moisture outward. Layer 3: A jacket to protect against the elements (rain, snow, and wind). To eliminate moisture, the whole outfit must be breathable.
