These pants have water-repellent inserts (front of leg, seat) so water slides off the fabric’s surface. This product is water-repellent, not waterproof.

The water repellency prevents the pants from getting wet too quickly. However, this won’t be enough to keep you dry if you’re in steady rain. For intense rain, you will need a pair of rain pants like the MT 500 Hiking Pants (ref. 8736465).

Water repellency can be reactivated using a water-repellent spray (ref. 8800346).

How water-repellent is the fabric in the reinforced areas of the 2-in-1 MT 500 Hiking Pants?

The 2-in-1 MT 500 Hiking Pants are equipped with: 
- 2 zipped hand pockets
- 2 zipped thigh pockets (and 1 mesh pocket inside the right pocket)
- 1 zipped back pocket

The pants are stretchy at the bottom so you can adjust them to fit perfectly over your shoes.

The pants come with a belt.

What accessories are available for the 2-in-1 MT 500 Hiking Pants?

We recommend washing your 2-in-1 pants with the lower legs zipped up. This will ensure that one part of the pants doesn’t wear faster than the rest!

These pants are designed with 3 different fabrics:
- a durable fabric (198 g/m²) on the areas that need protection from abrasion (seat, bottom of the leg at the front). This fabric is also stretchy, so you can move freely.
- a light, breathable fabric (145 g/m²) on the rest of the pants.
- a very stretchy crotch gusset.

What are the benefits of breathable pants?

These pants are designed to keep all your personal belongings close at hand. Your phone, keys, and wallet can be stored in one of the 4 zippered pockets: 
Two hand pockets and two thigh pockets. 

What can you store in the pockets?

Easy care. Machine wash at 30°C and your pants are ready to go again. Tip: fasten the zippers and turn the pants inside out before putting them in the machine. The breathable fabric dries quickly.

We have used a Betaspun yarn structure, where polyamide threads coat merino wool fibres, protecting them from abrasion and cuts without affecting their properties.

Machine wash your boxers at 30°C on a normal cycle, preferably with liquid detergent. 
Dry flat and never tumble dry to avoid shrinkage.

Wool fibres can store a lot of air and let water vapour escape, making wool an excellent choice for moisture management and thermal regulation. Wool’s ability to store and release moisture make it an insulating, comfortable material for hiking socks.

The properties of wool

The merino wool, from Spain, has been a carefully selected breed for generations because of its wool. It provides a softer fibre than traditional wool. After shearing, the wool is cleaned to remove impurities, then carded, spun, and finally used for knitting or weaving.

What is merino wool?

Merino wool offers an unbeatable experience: soft, lightweight, and breathable. Thanks to its fine fibres, it provides natural thermal regulation. It keeps your feet warm in cool weather and cool in warm weather.

What are the benefits of merino wool?

To stay warm when hiking in the winter, we recommend: 
- Warmth: wear warm socks (ideally with a good percentage of wool). 
- Breathability: choose socks based on the intensity of the hike and, to minimize moisture, make sure they’re breathable.
- Boot height: the height of your socks should correspond to the height of the boot: for more protection, choose higher socks.

How do I choose the right footwear for hiking in the snow?

Customization

These pants have a sporty cut, and the extremely lightweight components (14% elastane) provide freedom of movement. The integrated waistband also ensures a better fit.

Several criteria measure the fabric’s ability to wick away perspiration and dry quickly: absorption capacity of the fabric, fabric’s capacity not to saturate with perspiration, drying speed, etc. 
Level 1/5 is suitable for low-intensity activities that don’t generate much sweat. All our hiking pants have a performance rating of 3/5.

Main component 

A product’s waterproof rating depends on two key criteria: component and construction. 
This product was made with a membrane.
The membrane is a kind of very thin plastic film (polyurethane) that makes the component waterproof and breathable. 
It is flexible, lightweight, and breathable.

3-layer design: The membrane is glued between the outer and inner fabric. We use it for durable, high-performance rain pants.

Layer design

Laboratory tests are conducted to guarantee the waterproof rating of a component. The resistance of a fabric is measured by the height of a water column in mm that can be supported by the fabric (test based on the ISO 1092 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. 
This product’s component has a 15,000-mm waterproof rating and can withstand the pressure of a 15,000-mm water column. 
This is also equivalent to 15,000 Schmerbers.

Component waterproofing

We conduct laboratory tests that simulate rainfall to guarantee the product’s waterproof rating.  
This product was validated in a shower test under 18 cm of rain for 2 hours. This test reproduces the average conditions of a mountain storm.

Waterproofing

A fabric is water-repellent when water slides off its surface without being absorbed. Because the fabric doesn’t soak up water, it remains lightweight and breathable.Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. This treatment needs to be reapplied throughout the product’s lifetime. The water-repellent properties can be reactivated by putting the pants in the dryer for 10 minutes on low or by using a reactivation spray (ref.: 8551983).

How to restore water repellency

Component breathability is measured by its thermal evaporative resistance (RET). 
This allows perspiration to escape during physical activity, preventing it from accumulating on the skin. 
The lower the RET, the more breathable the fabric. 

RET ≤ 6: very breathable fabric 
RET ≤ 12: breathable fabric 
RET ≤ 20: not very breathable fabric 
This product has a RET of 8.

Water repellency is a fabric’s capacity to make water run off its surface without being absorbed. It prevents the fabric from soaking up water, keeping it lightweight, warm, and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. The garment should be retreated over its lifespan (recommended after each wash). Products for this purpose (spray or liquid) are available in our stores.

What is water repellency and how can you maintain it?

The inside fabric is brushed—a tried-and-tested method for retaining heat. The principle is simple: the knit component is designed to trap air, which acts as a natural insulator, keeping the body warm. Animal fur and feathers work on exactly the same principle.
