This garment was subjected to a shower test using 60 litres of water/m²/hour for 2 hours. This test reproduces average rain shower conditions in the mountains.
A waterproof rating of 5,000 mm means the fabric can withstand pressure exerted by 5,000 mm of water (the equivalent of a rain shower lasting for two hours).
Waterproofing is expressed in Schmerber units (for example: 5,000 Schmerbers). 

Component waterproofing

To assess the breathability of the fabric or the evaporative resistance, we measure RET (test based on the ISO 11092 standard). The lower the fabric's resistance, the more water vapour generated by physical activity evaporates, and the higher the fabric's breathability. For example: RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric/9 < RET < 12 = very breathable fabric/12 < RET < 20 = breathable fabric/RET > 20 = little or no breathability.

We conduct numerous laboratory tests to validate the highest standards in terms of durability: an abrasion- and friction-resistance test to ensure that the fleece does not pill; a colourfastness test to check the behaviour and resistance of the colours; and an aging test to ensure that repeated washing does not alter the fabric’s properties, thickness, or appearance.

Make the waterproofing of these bib pants last longer by reactivating the water repellency every three washes or after ten uses in the rain. Three methods:

The resistance of a fabric is measured by the height of a water column in mm that can be supported by the fabric (test based on the JIS 1092 standard).The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. 
A component with an impermeability of 5,000 mm will therefore withstand the pressure exerted by 5,000 mm of water (which corresponds roughly to a 1-hour downpour). Waterproofing is expressed in Schmerber units (for example: 5,000 Schmerbers). This number applies before washing.

A coating applied to the fabric makes it waterproof and windproof. Technically, a waterproof fabric is also windproof. Protection from the wind is critical, as wind can chill the body during physical activity.

Component breathability is measured by its thermal evaporative resistance (RET). 
This allows perspiration to escape during physical activity, preventing it from accumulating on the skin. 
The lower the RET, the more breathable the fabric.
