Main Material

The fabric for these overpants is water-repellent: water slides off its surface. This keeps the fabric from soaking up water, so it stays lightweight and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. In 2022, this model will be marketed with a more environmentally friendly water-repellent treatment.

PFC-free water repellency

To maintain water repellency, we recommend regular reactivation. 
Reactivate water repellency after three washes (remember to rinse thoroughly) or after using a dozen times in the rain. 
You can easily reactivate water repellency by warming the fabric: 
- in a tumble dryer for 15 minutes (synthetics cycle) - with a hair dryer, moving back and forth from a distance of 20 cm (7 ¾”), twice
- by ironing on the delicate setting with the steam function off

Long-lasting performance

We measure a fabric’s resistance to water pressure, expressed in terms of the height of a water column in mm (based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. Waterproof material rated 2,000 mm can withstand the pressure exerted by a 2,000 mm column of water (roughly the equivalent of a two-hour shower).

The fabric of this jacket is breathable: RET = 12. To find out whether a fabric is breathable, we test its total evaporative resistance (RET) based on the ISO 11092 standard. The lower the fabric’s resistance, the more perspiration can escape and the more breathable the fabric is.

Fabric breathability

When playing sports, how much we perspire depends on the intensity and duration of the effort. If the fabric is not breathable enough, condensation from sweat can accumulate, making you feel damp. How does the material insulate you from the cold?

We make our polyester from plastic bottles, reducing the use of oil-based resources while preserving the material’s quality and performance.

Why choose recycled polyester?

Two types of tests measure warmth:
- a material test 
- a test on a thermal dummy in a thermal chamber We reproduce the temperature, wind (5 km/h), and humidity conditions encountered in the mountains during a 5 km/h hike.
These tests help us validate our design choices before field testing. 
This fleece has a comfort temperature between 7°C and 10°C (without a jacket over top).

How is warmth measured?

Wear on our hiking fleeces is tested to guarantee durability. We guarantee:
- resistance to wear from backpacks and arm movements to delay pilling, specific to this material
- the strength of seams
- resistance of the fleece material after three washes (size stability)
- the material retains its colour after washing and exposure to UV and perspiration

The wind can make you feel considerably colder.
When the outside temperature is 0°C, winds of 20 km/h make the temperature feel like -10°C.
Windproof components reduce the discomfort associated with this freezing effect. Windproofing elements form a barrier against the wind and effectively reduce heat loss.

Sizing information

Resistance to wear and abrasion test: lab tests confirm that fleeces do not pill, among other things. Colourfastness test: ensures the colours do not bleed. Aging test: verifies that repeated washing does not alter the fabric’s properties, performance, thickness, or appearance.

Component test

Whatever your cold-weather activity, use the three-layer technique:
Layer 1: A high-tech base layer to wick moisture away from the body and keep your skin dry.
Layer 2: A fleece or sweater to provide warmth and transfer moisture outwards.
Layer 3: A jacket to protect against the elements (rain, snow, and wind). 
To eliminate moisture, the whole outfit must be breathable.

How to dress properly for cold weather hiking

This product is guaranteed for two years from the date shown on the sales receipt. A product covered by the warranty will be exchanged free of charge. The warranty covers product defects, excluding those resulting from normal wear and tear or improper use.

How does my product warranty work?

The 5,000-mm coating will protect you even in a downpour.

The feminine cut of this jacket suits different body types. You can wear a warm layer underneath, such as a fleece jacket or light sweater. The inner lining also improves comfort. 
You can choose your usual size or one size up if you want a looser fit.

Detach the hood using the snaps. Adjust its height using an elastic cord and adjust the depth with the hook-and-loop tab at the back.

This jacket is made with 2 coated layers, including a large mesh lining. 
That means the jacket has an outer fabric and a lining. 
A coating similar to resin is applied to the inside of the fabric, making the material waterproof yet breathable. The jacket’s inner lining protects this coating.

Jacket composition

We measure a fabric’s resistance to water pressure, expressed in terms of the height of a water column in mm (based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. 
The component of this product has a waterproof rating of 5,000 mm: it can withstand the pressure exerted by a 5,000-mm column of water. This is also equivalent to 5,000 Schmerbers.

Waterproofing test

Component breathability is measured by thermal evaporative resistance (RET). 
This is the fabric’s ability to let perspiration escape during physical activity and prevent it from accumulating on the skin. 
The lower the RET, the more breathable the fabric. 

RET ≤ 6: Very breathable fabric.
RET ≤ 12: Breathable fabric.
RET ≤ 20: Little breathability.

Worn as a third layer, this padded jacket has been certified for an active comfort temperature of -5°C during a standardized test in a thermal chamber. The model is wearing a synthetic, long-sleeved T-shirt and a light fleece underneath. Effective in simulated 5 km/h wind. 
We also tested this product in static mode: the comfort temperature is 5°C in this case.

How warm is this padded jacket?

The fill power of down has 3 advantages for mountain hiking:

- Thermal insulation, because of the air trapped in the down and feathers.
Ultra-lightweight: down is lighter than synthetic fill and provides the same warmth. This saves even more weight in your backpack.
- Ultra-compressible.

The advantages of duck down and feather filling

Fill power is a measure of the down’s thermal insulation capacity and potential to trap air. It is expressed in cuin (cubic inches).
Down with higher fill power will take up more space, trap more air, and provide greater thermal insulation.With an 85% down and 15% feather filling, this jacket has a guaranteed fill power of 800 cuin or more (international standard).

Inflating power of down/feather filling

A fabric’s water repellency is its ability to make water run off its surface without being absorbed.
This prevents the fabric from absorbing water and keeps it lightweight and warm. The fabric in this down jacket is water-repellent, although we recommend you wear a waterproof jacket over top in the rain. The fabric is made water-repellent by treating its outer surface, but the treatment can deteriorate with use. 
We recommend restoring it after each wash.

Water repellency (not to be confused with waterproofing)

This washable down jacket can be worn all winter. But the less you wash it, the longer its thermal insulation and water repellency will last.
  
In short: 
1. Machine wash at 30°C with detergent specially formulated for down or technical garments. Gentle spin cycle.

2. Tumble dry with 2 or 3 tennis balls and repeat 2 or 3 times until it is completely dry.

How to care for down jackets

Once you have cleaned your padded jacket, we recommend using a water-repellent reactivator spray to preserve the hydrophobic properties of the outer fabric. This renews the fabric’s water-repellent properties and optimizes its performance throughout its life cycle.

How do I reactivate the waterproofing properties?

Snags are common when hiking in a padded jacket. Simply mend it or apply an iron-on patch to prevent the tear from getting bigger and letting the synthetic fibres escape.
