Wool fibres can store a lot of air and let water vapour escape, making wool an excellent choice for moisture management and thermal regulation. Wool’s ability to store and release moisture make it an insulating, comfortable material for hiking socks.

The properties of wool

The merino wool, from Spain, has been a carefully selected breed for generations because of its wool. It provides a softer fibre than traditional wool. After shearing, the wool is cleaned to remove impurities, then carded, spun, and finally used for knitting or weaving.

What is merino wool?

Merino wool offers an unbeatable experience: soft, lightweight, and breathable. Thanks to its fine fibres, it provides natural thermal regulation. It keeps your feet warm in cool weather and cool in warm weather.

What are the benefits of merino wool?

To stay warm when hiking in the winter, we recommend: 
- Warmth: wear warm socks (ideally with a good percentage of wool). 
- Breathability: choose socks based on the intensity of the hike and, to minimize moisture, make sure they’re breathable.
- Boot height: the height of your socks should correspond to the height of the boot: for more protection, choose higher socks.

How do I choose the right footwear for hiking in the snow?

This fleece sweatshirt is fitted yet comfortable. We recommend wearing a technical undergarment as a base layer for added protection from the cold. This fleece sweatshirt was designed to be layered under a windproof or waterproof jacket, such as our Women’s MH 100 Hiking Jacket. Choose your usual size.

The fleece component is designed to trap air, which acts as a natural insulator to keep the body warm. 

How does the fabric insulate you from the cold?

We perform two kinds of tests to measure the warmth of our fleece:
- a material test 
- tests on a thermal manikin in a thermal chamber We reproduce wind (5 km/h), temperature, and humidity conditions typically encountered in the mountains on a 5 km/h hike.
These laboratory tests determine the design, which is then validated by field testers. 
This fleece will keep you comfortable at temperatures ranging from 7°C to 10°C, with no extra layer.

How is warmth measured?

Our hiking fleece is tested for guaranteed durability. We guarantee:
- resistance to pilling due to backpack use and body movement
- durable seams
- resistance to washing
- colourfastness after washing, exposure to UV light, or contact with perspiration

We designed these pants with stretch fabric for maximum freedom of movement, so essential when hiking.

Worn as a first or second layer depending on the weather and your needs, you can use this women's thermal base layer for all of your winter activities.

The cut of this thermal base layer is classic and straight, and it adapts to all body shapes. It’s not overly loose so as not to keep the body warm.

You need three technical layers to keep warm on the slopes:
- Layer 1 or second skin, to stay dry.
- Layer 2 or insulating layer, to keep the heat in. 
- Layer 3 to protect against the elements.

How to stay warm on the slopes

This base layer, designed to be worn as a first layer, can also be used as a light second layer in milder weather, thanks to its large half-zip that provides natural ventilation.

Can this base layer be worn against the skin or over the top of a first layer?

Comfort temperature: 5°C to -5°C. Down with a fill power of 800 cuin.

Worn as a third layer, this down jacket was certified effective during standardized heat chamber testing to a low of -5°C. The model is wearing a synthetic, long-sleeved shirt and a light fleece underneath. It works with a simulated 5 km/h wind. We also tested this product in static mode; the comfort temperature is 5°C in this case.

How warm is this padded jacket?

The fill power of down has 3 advantages for mountain hiking: 
- Thermal insulation, because of the air trapped in the down and feathers.
- Ultra-lightweight: down wadding is lighter than synthetic and provides the same warmth. This saves more weight in your backpack.
- Ultra-compressible.

The advantages of down and feather filling

Fill power is a measure of the down’s thermal insulation capacity and potential to trap air. It is expressed in cuin (cubic inches). Down with higher fill power will take up more space, trap more air, and provide greater thermal insulation. This jacket is filled with 90% down and 10% feathers and has a guaranteed fill power of 800 cuin (international standard) or more.

Inflating power of down/feather filling

This fabric is water-repellent. Water repellency keeps the fabric lightweight and warm. It is recommended to wear a waterproof jacket over top in the rain. Treatment on the outer surface achieves water repellency, but the treatment can deteriorate with use. We recommend restoring it after each wash.

Water repellency (different from waterproofing)

This washable down jacket can be worn all winter. But the less you wash it, the longer its thermal insulation and water repellency will last.
Our advice: 
1. Machine wash at 30°C with detergent specially formulated for down or technical garments. Use a gentle spin cycle. 
2. Tumble dry with 2 or 3 tennis balls; repeat 2 or 3 times until completely dry.

How to care for down jackets

After washing, we recommend using a water-repellent spray to prevent water absorption. This renews water-repellent properties and improves performance throughout the garment’s life cycle.

Snags are common during hikes. The good news is that it can be repaired to prevent further tearing and to stop feathers from escaping. Need help repairing? Don’t worry! Some Decathlon workshops offer in-store repairs.
