How waterproof is it?

The Schmerber measures the resistance to water pressure: The higher this number, the more waterproof the fabric. With a rating of 20,000 mm water (Schmerber), this jacket resists a water column of 20 m and guarantees optimal protection, even in heavy rain.

What is a Schmerber?

Thanks to its membrane, this jacket combines waterproofing and moisture wicking. The 3-layer design incorporates the membrane between the outer fabric and the interior, offering enhanced durability and reliable performances for all your hikes.

What is a membrane?

The drawback of waterproof jackets is often their lack of breathability. They keep you dry on the outside, but damp on the inside. To avoid this, this jacket uses breathable fabric and has large side openings for better humidity evacuation.

Why use a ripstop fabric?

The thermal evaporative resistance (RET) defines the breathability of the fabric. The lower the RET, the more breathable the fabric:
- RET < 6: very breathable
- RET ≤ 12: breathable
- RET ≤ 20: low breathability 
With a RET of 6, this jacket guarantees good humidity evacuation during physical efforts.

What is a RET index?

Do up the zips, turn the jacket inside out, and machine-wash it at 30°C. 
Use a smaller dose of detergent (preferably one specifically for waterproof clothing) to avoid residues. 
Rinse and gently wring out to protect the jacket.

How to wash your jacket

3 methods: 
- Dry the jacket in a tumble dryer for 15 minutes. This can reactivate the water-repellent treatment of the fabric.
- Use our detergent for technical products then apply the water repellency reactivator.
- Use the water repellency reactivator spray.

When worn as a third layer, this padded jacket has been certified for an active comfort temperature of -10°C during a standardized test in a thermal chamber. The model is wearing a synthetic, long-sleeved shirt and a light fleece underneath. It works with a simulated 5 km/h wind. We also tested this product in static mode; the comfort temperature is 0°C in this case.

How warm is this padded jacket?

The fill power of down has 3 advantages for mountain hiking: 
- Thermal insulation, because of the air trapped in the down and feathers.
- Ultra-lightweight: down wadding is lighter than synthetic and provides the same warmth. This saves more weight in your backpack.
- Ultra-compressible.

The advantages of down and feather filling

Fill power is a measure of the down’s thermal insulation capacity and potential to trap air. It is expressed in cuin (cubic inches). Down with higher fill power will take up more space, trap more air, and provide greater thermal insulation. This jacket is filled with 90% down and 10% feathers and has a guaranteed fill power of 800 cuin (international standard) or more.

Filling weight

This washable down jacket can be worn all winter. 
Our advice: 
1. Machine wash with a detergent suitable for down or technical garments at 30°C. Use a gentle spin cycle. 
2. Tumble dry with 2 or 3 tennis balls, and repeat 2 or 3 times until it is completely dry.

How to care for down jackets

This fabric is water-repellent. Water repellency keeps the fabric lightweight and warm. It is recommended to wear a waterproof jacket over top in the rain. Treatment on the outer surface achieves water repellency, but the treatment can deteriorate with use. We recommend restoring it after each wash.

Water repellency (different from waterproofing)

After washing, we recommend using a water-repellent spray to prevent water absorption. This renews water-repellent properties and improves performance throughout the garment’s life cycle.

Snags are common during hikes. The good news is that it can be repaired to prevent further tearing and to stop feathers from escaping.

To make repairs easier, we sell tightening buckles and chest clips that are compatible with your bag. Don’t throw away, repair!

Repairs

There is a compartment in the bag to place a water bladder as well as a hole for the tube.
The water bladder is not included, but you can buy a 1-litre (1 qt.), 2-litre (2 qt.), or 3-litre (3 qt.) one in stores.

1 - Loosen all the straps (shoulder straps, belt, load adjuster straps). 
2 - Put the backpack on. 
3 - Put the belt around the waist, and tighten it. 
4 - Tighten the shoulder straps. 
5 - Adjust the load adjuster straps as needed.

How to adjust your backpack

We recommend handwashing your backpack. Use soapy, lukewarm water and focus on the areas in contact with the body (shoulder straps, back, and belt), using a brush if needed.
This is the best way to maintain the fabric’s properties, particularly the waterproofing.
Rinse well with lukewarm water and dry away from heat and sunlight. Store in a dry place.
