How to look after your bike

This kit contains the 3 products needed to carry out the 3 steps required to properly maintain your bike. You will be able to carry out at least 3 full services on your bike.
Products included in the kit: 
01. Plant-based degreaser (100 ml)
02. Concentrated bike cleaner (100 ml)
03. All-weather chain lubricant (50 ml)

Kit contents

This degreaser lets you effectively degrease your drive train. You can apply it using a brush or our chain cleaner. 
Application with a brush: pour about 25 ml into a pot and apply generously to your chain, cassette, derailleurs and derailleur pulleys. Leave for a few moments then move on to step 2.
Application with the chain cleaner: pour on about 9 ml, turn the pedals a few times before moving on to step 2.

How to use the drive train degreaser

Pour about 30 ml of concentrate into a bucket of water then apply generously with a sponge to the whole bike. 
The product will not damage the paint or any other components of the bike.
Rinse with clean water then dry your bike. Pay particular attention to drying, especially your drive train, to ensure total efficiency later on. Now you can move on to step 3.

How to use the concentrated bike cleaner

Remove the cap, position the applicator on the lower part of the chain (inner side) and make a full turn (in the opposite direction to pedalling). 
To make sure you don’t apply too much, use your quick-release as a guide.  
Remove the excess lubricant with a cloth placed under the chain, then do 2 or 3 complete turns of the pedal (in the opposite direction).
The lubricant will protect your chain in all riding conditions.

How to use your chain lubricant

01. degrease your drive train if you’re applying the product with a brush, be careful not to project the dirt towards you.
02. concentrated bike cleaner: in winter, use warm water to make this step easier and use cold water in the summer.
03. chain lubricant: apply on the inside of the chain, position the applicator on the lower part of the chain.

Good to know

Remember to degrease your chain before applying new grease in order to remove any residue that could make abrasive contact with your drive train. This will help your equipment last longer and save you money.

There’s nothing worse than a plasticky taste or smell in a water bottle. But this occurs with most cycling water bottles. 
We tested numerous plastics before finding just the right one, which is flexible and has a neutral taste and smell. When blind-tested against bottles from other leading brands, ours were the most neutral-tasting.

No more plasticky smell or taste.

Clean the water bottle thoroughly after each use. If you use isotonic drinks, rinse all parts of the bottle, cap and mouthpiece to make sure there is no liquid remaining inside. Use liquid detergent and a long brush to clean the bottom of the bottle. 
Dry well and store with the cap off. Otherwise, mould could develop in the bottle.
Do not put in the dishwasher (particularly above 70°C[158°F]).

How to care for your water bottle

This fork combines comfort and sturdiness.
The 3 inserts on each fork leg can accommodate a front luggage rack, water bottle holders or small equipment storage.The maximum weight you can carry on the fork is 2 x 1 kg (2.2 lb).

Fork

The Gravel Discovery bike is equipped with an oversize aluminum Ergo handlebar with a 16° flare, meaning the angle between the vertical part and the side of the handlebars. This makes it easier to hold and improves comfort.
For a size XS, the handlebar width will be 400 mm, for a size S 420 mm, M/L 440 mm, and for a size XL, 460 mm.
We’ve choosen an Ergo oversize aluminum stem. Here are the details per size:
XS 60 mm, S 70 mm, M 80 mm, L 90 mm, XL 100 mm.

You will need to bed the brakes in. 

Brakes

This involves gradually heating up the brake pads and rotors to create an even contact surface.
Before bedding in your brakes, it’s important to do the following:
Clean the brake discs. If you change the pad, it’s recommended that you also change the rotors.
Get kitted out. Wear a helmet and install a bike computer or bike GPS to your bike.
Choose a safe place. Bed in your brakes on a flat, dry, obstacle-free road.

Bedding in your brake pads is absolutely essential for effective breaking.

It’s important to alternate between the front and rear brakes, and to work through the following steps:
Step 1: Ride at 15 km/h and gradually brake to slow yourself to 5 km/h, 10 times in a row.
Step 2: Ride at 20 km/h and gradually brake to slow yourself to 5 km/h, 10 times in a row.
Step 3: Ride at 25 km/h and gradually brake to slow yourself to 5 km/h, 10 times in a row.
Between each step, release the brakes and ride a few dozen metres to let the rotor and caliper cool down.

The bedding-in process involves gradually braking several times in a row from increasing speeds.

Use one brake at a time so that you don’t overheat the pads.
Ride on a flat surface to avoid jolts.
Don’t brake abruptly.
Be patient. Bedding in can take up to 30 minutes.

If you notice a rainbow mark on your rotors or if your braking isn’t very effective, this means that your brakes are “glazed.” If this happens, please visit a Decathlon workshop.

A few extra tips for bedding in your brakes:

Choose your bike size based on your height and build (arm span and leg length).
If you are between sizes, opting for the smaller size will give you a more comfortable position that makes it easier to tackle gravel trails.
