The waterproofness of a fabric, provided by a coating or membrane, is measured in Schmerbers or mm (pressure exerted by a column of water). The higher this number, the more waterproof the fabric. 
This jacket is designed with a waterproof coating: this component resists 5,000 mm of water pressure (Schmerbers) before washing (equivalent to the pressure exerted by a 5-metre column of water).

Water resistance (fabric)

To determine a fabric’s breathability, we test its evaporative resistance or RET (based on the ISO 11092 standard). The lower the fabric’s resistance, the more perspiration can escape, and the higher the fabric’s breathability. 
RET < 9: extremely breathable fabric
RET < 12: very breathable fabric
RET < 20: breathable fabric
RET > 20: little or non-breathable fabric.

Fabric breathability

The fabric for this jacket is water-repellent: water slides off its surface. In this way, the fabric doesn’t soak up water and stays lightweight and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. Our water-repellent coatings are now perfluorocarbon-free. As a result, this model will be sold with a more environmentally friendly water-repellent treatment.

Your health is our top priority

To maintain water repellency, we recommend regular reactivation. 
Reactivate water repellency after three washes (remember to rinse thoroughly) or after using a dozen times in the rain. 
You can easily reactivate the water repellency properties by warming the fabric: 
- in a dryer for 15 minutes (synthetics cycle)
- with a hair dryer, moving back and forth from a distance of 20 cm (8”)
- with an iron on the delicate setting and with the steam function off

How to maintain waterproofing over time

How much you perspire depends on the intensity and duration of your physical activity.If the fabric isn’t breathable enough for the type of activity/exercise, your perspiration will condense inside the item.The jacket will feel damp inside. This dampness is not rain soaking through but condensation caused by perspiration. This means you need to choose top-layer pants suitable for your activity.This product is designed for 2-hour hikes at no more than 5 km/h (3 mph).

Thanks to your feedback, we improved the design of the 10 litre Arpenaz NH 50 Hiking Backpack.
We added a double zipper on the main compartment and a larger pocket bottom on the outside pocket. The aim is to not lose your belongings when opening your bag. 
And of course, the price hasn’t increased!

Your opinion is important to us!

The volume of each backpack is measured using a standardized method: the main compartment and all the pockets are filled with little balls. These balls are then emptied into a graduated container to get the equivalent volume in litres.

How is volume measured?

Put heavy items at the bottom. Pack your clothes around these items. Keep your waterproof jacket and/or fleece in an easy-to-access location. Place small frequently used items in the pockets (sunscreen, map, glasses, etc.). 

How to pack your backpack

At Decathlon, all of our Quechua backpacks are guaranteed for 10 years against normal product wear and tear. In the case of a defect, we recommend its repair, replacement, or a refund. The guarantee covers the components from the zip to the seams: more information can be found on our website.

For example, we test the fabric’s resistance to abrasion and tearing, colourfastness, and waterproofing. We also check the resistance of the construction using a dummy that reproduces a hiker’s movements to replicate several years of wear and tear.

3 - Tighten the shoulder straps.
4 - Adjust the load adjuster straps as needed.

How to adjust your backpack

The water-repellent components allow you to continue walking or hiking in light rain for short periods. Note: This backpack is not watertight or waterproof and does not come with a rain cover.
