How does the BL 100 Base Layer Top fit?

Polyester is the most-used fibre for base garments because it is relatively inexpensive, offers excellent performance, and can be knit to obtain a very lightweight and durable fabric. It actively absorbs moisture but does not dry particularly well when wet.

In addition to the padding, which components provide warmth?

We lab-test our products to provide you with a comfort indicator. The comfort indicator is measured without tights for pants, and with a thermal T-shirt and a fleece for jackets. The temperature indicated is the external temperature at which the testers were neither warm nor cold. Of course, the perceived temperature varies depending on the intensity of the activity and each individual’s metabolism.

How is comfort temperature measured?

To stay warm and dry, we recommend using the 3-layer technique: 
- Layer 1 or second skin, to stay dry. 
- Layer 2 or insulating layer, to keep the heat in.
- Layer 3 to protect against the elements.

The resistance of a fabric is measured by the height of the water column (measured in mm) that the fabric can withstand (test based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. A water-resistance rating of 10,000 mm means the fabric can resist 10,000 mm of water pressure.
For skiing, we advise components rated between 3,000 mm and 20,000 mm.
At Decathlon, we lab test all of our waterproof products. This product scores 3/5.

How is the water resistance measured?

The membrane is a very fine component applied to the inner surface of the outer jacket fabric. This component prevents water from seeping in while wicking away perspiration. The membrane is unbeatable when it comes to keeping you warm and dry.

What is a membrane and what does it do?

The 500 ski jacket is made of sturdy, water-resistant materials that reduce wind chill for better protection against the elements. To check its waterproof rating, this jacket was tested under a special shower test that replicates the conditions skiers face. This jacket’s waterproofing was field-tested in various weather conditions for several days.

Which parts of the jacket protect me in bad weather?

Water repellency is a material’s ability to let water bead off the surface without being absorbed. This jacket features water-repellent components that improve its weather resistance. The exterior surface of the fabric is treated to make it water-repellent.

Why does my jacket need water repellency?

Bear in mind that the water-repellent feature can be reactivated. To do this, you can use a waterproof spray (sold in our stores): spray the product evenly over the entire item, then allow to dry for 10 to 12 hours.

How to reactivate water repellency

This jacket wicks perspiration away. To determine a fabric’s breathability, we measure its resistance to evaporative heat (RET) based on a standardized ISO 11092 test. The lower the RET, the more breathable the fabric. The 500 ski jacket has a RET of 11. However, it is Wedze’s technical solutions (zippers, vents, mesh) that reduce condensation and maximize breathability.

What is a breathable jacket?

Regular fit. The jacket’s sides are straight rather than fitted. This jacket is roomy enough to be worn over a first and second technical layer.

The snow skirt adjusts automatically, and adjustable cuffs block drafts and snow, especially in the event of a fall.

Keeps snow out if you fall

* Close all the zippers on the jacket.
* Turn it inside out.
* Machine wash at 30°C on the delicate cycle with little detergent and no fabric softener. 
Important: Use a gentle/delicate spin cycle (less than 800 rpm). Spinning too fast may create clumps that are difficult to undo.

Care

Tumble dry (strongly recommended). 
* Gentle or delicate cycle. 
* Dry on several long cycles to dry completely. * If you do not have a dryer, it will take longer to dry (drying flat can take 1 to 2 weeks). Make sure you pat the jacket to avoid any lumps.

The waterproof component and the assembly prevent water from getting in. The seams are waterproof, and the zippers are also waterproof and under a protective flap. This jacket has been tested in a special shower that reproduces the conditions of the ski resorts, and in the field for several days in different weather conditions.

Highly waterproof (15,000 mm Schmerber) and tested in real-life conditions

A fabric's water-repellent property is its ability to let water slide off its surface without soaking in. The fabric doesn’t soak up water and so remains lightweight, breathable and warm. It is made from a treatment on the outside of the fabric, which must be renewed (every 3 washes).

The pants are padded with 60 g/m² insulation: just enough to keep you warm without being too thick.

Warm without compromising on breathability

The RET, or the evaporative resistance of the material (ISO 11092 standard), is 12. The lower this rating, the more water vapour generated by the body evaporates.

Breathable fabric and ventilation

This is a very thin polyurethane film that makes the material waterproof while remaining breathable. More flexible, lightweight, resistant and often more breathable than coating, which is less expensive and requires a protective lining, similar to paint applied to the inside of the fabric.

Weight

You don't need to wear anything under these padded pants. However, in very cold weather, you can wear a breathable thermal base layer (known as a layer 1).

What should you wear under your ski pants?

The water repellency of your pants should be reactivated regularly (every 3 washes). Over time, even though they remain waterproof thanks to the component, they seem to start absorbing water. To do this, use a reactivating spray or a treatment reapplication product.

All our gloves and mittens have a water-repellent treatment that means their fabric does not absorb water, but instead ensures it slides across the surface. As a result, the fabric does not become saturated with water. It remains light and warm. A fabric becomes water-repellent thanks to a treatment applied to its outer surface. To remain effective, this treatment must be reapplied every 2 to 3 washes with specific products that are available in our stores.

Water repellency of the component

These ski gloves have a water-resistant membrane (a very thin polymer film) between the lining and the outer part of the glove. This membrane acts as a barrier to water and makes the product waterproof. In addition, the outer materials of the product benefit from a water-repellent treatment that reduces water absorption. Only a rubber glove is watertight. A glove with a membrane, under extremely damp conditions, will have limited waterproofness.

This scale reflects how easily you can handle objects while wearing the gloves. All our gloves are field-tested and given a dexterity score on a scale of 1 to 5. Gloves with a dexterity score of 5 allow you to handle objects just as you would with bare hands. 
The dexterity score is based on how well we could remove and put on ski goggles, adjust the hooks on a ski boot, and open and close a jacket.
