The resistance of a fabric is measured by the height of a water column in mm that can be supported by the fabric (test based on the JIS 1092 standard).The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric.This jacket can withstand 5,000 mm of water (equivalent to a rain shower lasting 1 hour).
To approve this, the MH 500 Waterproof Hiking Jacket was placed in a shower for one hour with a volume of 60 L of water/m²/h. This test reproduces average rain shower conditions in the mountains.


How is the water resistance of the MH 500 Waterproof Hiking Jacket measured?

Fabric breathability is measured by its thermal evaporative resistance (RET). 
This allows sweat to escape during physical activity, preventing it from accumulating on the skin. 
The lower the RET, the more breathable the fabric.

RET ≤ 6: very breathable fabric
RET ≤ 12: breathable fabric
RET ≤ 20: little or no breathability

How breathable is the MH 500 Waterproof Hiking Jacket?

Resistance to wear and abrasion test: for example, we test our fleeces in the lab to ensure they do not pill. Colourfastness test: we check colourfastness to ensure colours don’t bleed if they come into contact with saliva. Aging test: Verifies that repeated washing does not alter the fabric’s properties, performance, thickness, or appearance.

How is the resistance of the MH 500 Waterproof Hiking Jacket tested?

1/ Machine wash (30°C to 40°C): fasten hook-and-loop tabs and zippers. Use gentle detergent. Wash jackets and pants inside out. Loosen straps and elastics. 
2/ Avoid bunching the garment in the washing machine as this can damage it. 
3/ Do not mix garment types and colours. 
4/ Do not use bleach or fabric softener.
5/ Choose a long rinse and gentle spin cycle.
6/ Hang to dry or run it through the dryer (minimum temperature, minimum duration).

What does the UV protection do?  
It protects your eyes from UV rays.
UV radiation is present in winter and summer, in sunny and cloudy weather, and can be harmful to your eyes and eye contours.
The lenses are made of polycarbonate mixed with UV protection against the harmful rays of the sun (UVA and UVB).

Tinted lens classification based on ISO 12312-1 standard: 
- Category 1: lens with a light tint for reduced sunlight. 
- Category 2: lens with a medium tint for average sunlight. 
- Category 3: dark lens for strong sunlight (sea and mountains). Between 82% and 92% visible light absorbed.
- Category 4: very dark lens, for exceptional sunlight (high mountains). Between 92% and 97% visible light absorbed.

Glare

Our lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is resistant to impacts but scratches easily.
The UV protection does not decrease if your lenses get scratched; the mirror effect is purely for aesthetic purposes.
The same goes for the colour of our tinted lenses.

Worn as a third layer, this padded jacket has been certified for an active comfort temperature of -5°C during a standardized test in a thermal chamber. The model is wearing a synthetic, long-sleeved shirt and a light fleece underneath. It works with a simulated 5 km/h (3 mph) wind. We also tested this product in static conditions. The comfort temperature is 5°C in this case.

How warm is this padded jacket?

We use 100% polyester filling weighing 125 g/m² in the body and 100 g/m² in the sleeves and hood. 
The filling is made from silicone-coated spiral fibres that make it highly compressible and durable.
Despite its thinness, the trapped air makes the filling highly insulating and lightweight.

It retains its warmth even when wet.

This polyamide canvas uses 20 denier threads (thread unit of measurement) and resists up to 20,000 abrasion cycles. 
Durability is calculated using the Martindale test according to ISO standard 12947-2. This test involves rubbing the jacket’s material against another material to observe how the product resists wear.
Outer: 100% polyamide fabric (39 g/m²), 20 denier
Lining: 100% polyamide fabric (35 g/m²), a mix of 15 and 20 denier threads.

Durable materials

A fabric’s water repellency is its ability to make water run off its surface without being absorbed. This keeps the fabric lightweight and warm. The fabric is made water-repellent by treating its outer surface. However, this property may deteriorate with use. We recommend restoring it after each wash.

Water repellency (not to be confused with waterproofing)

The MT 100 Hiking Padded Jacket’s water-repellent treatment does not use PFCs (perfluorocarbons). PFCs make fabric water-repellent but are toxic to humans and the environment.  

PFC-free water-repellency treatment

Once you have cleaned your padded jacket, we recommend using a water-repellent reactivator spray to preserve the hydrophobic properties of the outer fabric. This renews the fabric’s water-repellent properties and optimizes its performance throughout its life cycle. You will find it in store and on our website by entering the code 8817233.

Restoring water repellency

Snags are common when hiking in a padded jacket. The good news is that they can be repaired to prevent tears from getting bigger or feathers from escaping. Not sure about repairing it yourself? Don’t worry! Some Decathlon workshops offer an in-store repair service to mend your product using a heat-bonded patch.
