All our gloves are lab-tested on a thermal hand. The temperature ratings (recommended and limit) come from a study with a test panel of 23 walkers exposed to temperatures ranging from 5°C to -20°C and 10 km/h (6 mph) winds. These temperature ratings are only valid in walking conditions.
The MT 500 Hiking Gloves have a warmth rating of 1 out of 5. Recommended temperature: 8°C | Limit temperature: 3°C.

How is usage temperature measured?

Just like you wear several layers of clothing when hiking, you can wear liner gloves under your gloves that will act as a thermal base layer. This multi-layer system enables pockets of air to form around your hands, efficiently insulating them from the cold. Remember to wear large enough gloves so your fingers do not become constricted. Compression reduces blood circulation in the fingers.

When active, the body generates heat that is preserved by your clothing’s thermal insulation. If clothing is inadequate, your body cools and circulation to your hands and feet drops to keep your upper body warm. Your clothing therefore plays a role in keeping your hands warm.

Dexterity refers to your ability to handle objects while wearing the gloves. Our MT 500 Hiking Gloves have been rated in a laboratory. The closer the glove’s dexterity is to 5, the easier it is to handle objects while wearing the glove in the same way a bare hand can. For example, we tested the MT 500 Hiking Gloves for putting on and opening a jacket, handling objects in a bivouac, and eating and drinking. The MT 500 Hiking Gloves have a dexterity rating of 4 out of 5.
