Our products are classified based on performance and features for 3 mountain hiking levels:
- Occasional: about 10 hikes per year of about 3 to 4 hours in length, covering less than 10 km (6 miles) and less than 700 m (2,296 ft.) in elevation gain.
- Regular: about 20 outings per year. 4 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km (6 to 12 miles), 700 to 1,200 m (2,296 to 3,937 ft.) of elevation gain per outing.
- Intensive: more than 20 times a year. More than 6 hours, more than 20 km (12 miles), 1,200 to 2,000 m (3,937 to 6,562 ft.) of elevation gain per outing.

How often do you hike and at what intensity?

We reduced the environmental impact of coating the inner sole fabric by dyeing the yarn at the source. Textile dyeing requires a lot of water and produces waste water from the dye baths. We use a bulk dyeing process that involves adding the colour pigments when the yarn itself is produced to reduce the environmental impact.

Sustainable development information

Certified sole grip. 
To be certified, the shoes must pass lab tests to assess their grip rate on different surfaces (smooth, rough, dry, wet). To validate these tests, we have a panel of representative testers evaluate the quality of our soles out in the mountains across 500 km (310 miles).

Grippy sole

In a lab, the boot is immersed in water to mid height while on a mechanical arm that simulates walking. We use this test to determine how long and how far the boot can go and still stay dry.
This is validated in the field and in the rain to ensure a consistent result.

Waterproofing test

To keep feet dry, use a waterproof gaiter or mini-gaiter to protect the top of your boots and to prevent water, pebbles, and sand from getting in.

Re-waterproof boots twice a year (search for “waterproofing” on our Decathlon website) to help to restore original water-repellent qualities and prevent stains on the outside.

You can choose one size up from your usual size so your toes won't bump the toe box when going downhill, as long as you still have the proper support to prevent friction.

Buying tips/how to try on hiking boots

Blisters generally develop when the skin is weakened by friction. To prevent blistering, we recommend the following: - Choose a shoe in your size.
- Wear suitable socks.
- Tie and tighten your shoes properly.
- Readjust your laces during activity, particularly before a climb or a descent. 
- Wear your shoes on a short outing on first use.

How to avoid blisters

Waterproof shoes are less breathable than non-waterproof shoes. Ideally, wear mid-length socks like the MH 500, MH 520, or MH 900 to wick away perspiration and reduce friction.

Which socks?

The original insole in your shoes is designed to fit most feet. Changing the insole may provide:
1. Improved support: some soles are preformed or reinforced to better support the arch of the foot. 2. More comfort: the insoles can also provide warmth and/or cushioning.
3. Longer life: restore your shoes' support and comfort by replacing the insole each season.

Our environmental policy

Designed in our laboratories with a special rubber formulation to optimize the grip and traction of the sole. We systematically research the best compromise for hiking on muddy ground (grip) and on dry ground (traction).

Grippy soles

Our hiking boots are designed for use on hiking trails. We select and test the sole and upper components to ensure they’re perfectly suited for walking on unpaved trails, such as forest paths, and rocky trails, such as coastal paths. Wearing them on paved roads could lead to premature wear and discomfort. They’re not suitable for mountain hiking.

Designed for hiking use

These boots are lab-tested and field-tested. They have a membrane to ensure that they are optimally waterproof and breathable. The boot is first immersed in water while internal air pressure is applied to check that no bubbles form on its surface. Next, the boots are placed on a mechanical arm that simulates walking and are half immersed in water to test that the insides remain perfectly dry.

The NH 150 Hiking Boots are waterproof for up to two hours of hiking. 
They have been laboratory tested up to 2,000 flexes. Once the boots are dry, they become waterproof once again.

The waterproofing test evaluates three levels:
- 2,000 flexes or approximately 2 hours of hiking.
- 4,000 flexes or approximately 4 hours of hiking.
- 8,000 flexes or approximately 8 hours of hiking.

Measuring waterproofness

Lab tested for the following elements: tear resistance of eyelets and straps, bonding, toxicology, UV resistance, abrasion resistance of outsole and upper components, and accelerated aging. 
We use these tests to improve the quality of our products and prevent the premature wear of our hiking boots.

Durability testing

We recommend that you use a waterproofing spray on your boots several times a year to restore their water-repellent properties and prevent staining.

Designed for hiking

The following aspects were tested in the lab: tear resistance of eyelets and straps, bonding, toxicology, UV resistance, abrasion resistance of the outsole and upper components, and accelerated aging. We use these tests to improve the quality of our products and prevent the premature wear of our hiking boots.

We use nubuck leather. It has a soft, silky feel. The leather used for these boots comes from cows. No animals are killed to produce this leather: we only use waste products from the food industry.

Where do we get our leather?

After your hike, we recommend that you
- Let your boots dry near a heat source.
- Use a hard-bristled brush on the dry leather to remove any mud or dirt.
- Use a soft-bristled brush or nubuck eraser to remove any stains.
- Clean stubborn stains using a brush and a little bit of warm water.
- Let the boots dry.
- Brush them again with a hard-bristled brush.
- Spray with a waterproofing product: this will make the leather shine and brighten up the colour.

Maintaining your leather boots

You need to manage dampness as best as you can when walking: you will sweat—it’s inevitable.
The NH 500 boot is breathable; it will wick away moisture. It is important to choose socks that are also light and breathable. We recommend the Hike 100 low or mid socks. They are made with moisture-absorbing cotton and have a reverse terry-knit structure that wicks moisture away from your foot. They’re high enough to protect your ankles from the boots. 

What materials and socks go well with the NH 500 boot?

Comfort temperature when stationary: -7°C; when moving: -16°C.

The thermal insulation when stationary (-7°C) and when walking (-16°C) is based on field and lab tests conducted with users. This gives you an accurate measure of the temperature at which these boots protect you. The comfort temperature ratings for your boots are displayed. We take into account that men and women feel the chill differently.

Are my boots warm enough for winter hikes?

Your boots have a membrane to guarantee waterproofing and breathability. A membrane is a very fine component (5 to 25 micrometres) affixed to the inside of a fabric that prevents water from entering but allows moisture to escape.

How do my boots protect me from outdoor conditions?

Thermal comfort is a balance between warmth and breathability. Too much heat or not enough breathability lets moisture accumulate and cold set in. This membrane is designed with your activities in mind, preventing water infiltration and letting moisture escape.

We made sure that your boots are waterproof by conducting laboratory tests that simulate walking with the boots half-submerged in water. We also conducted field tests to measure wear and aging. We tested 3 levels of waterproofing: 2,000 flexes (approx. 4-km hike), 4,000 flexes (approx. 8-km hike), and 8,000 flexes (approx. 16-km hike). This shoe has been tested for up to 2,000 flexes, which is equivalent to a 4-km hike.

Are my boots 100% waterproof?

A boot’s traction depends on the number and shape of treads. The grip depends on the sole materials and the tread pattern, like car tires. Traction optimizes propulsion, prevents slipping when going uphill, and stabilizes the boot. 
Grip prevents the boots from slipping and skidding on smooth ground or in demanding conditions (rain, snow, and ice).

What is the difference between traction and grip?

Boots with Snow Contact soles provide maximum grip for hiking and traction on snow. The strategic spacing and height of the lugs (3 mm) offer optimal grip when hiking on snow. The lugs are designed to grip hard snow and evacuate excess water to avoid slipping.

Which type of grip and traction does this boot provide?

The material and tread of Snow Contact soles are specifically designed for optimal grip and traction. Snow Contact soles are more effective on snow than traditional soles. When walking on ice, adding anti-slip grips to your boots is the only way to ensure optimum safety.

Will my boots withstand regular use in the long term?

Follow these guidelines for winter activities: Warmth: wear warm socks (ideally with a good percentage of wool).
Breathability: choose socks based on the intensity of the hike and make sure they’re breathable, to minimize moisture accumulation.
Boot height: the height of the sock should correspond to the height of the boot—for more protection, choose higher socks.

The right footwear for hiking in snow

Water repellency is a fabric’s capacity to make water run off its surface without being absorbed. It prevents the fabric from soaking up water, keeping it lightweight, warm, and breathable. Water repellency is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. This treatment needs to be reapplied throughout the product’s lifetime. Products for this purpose (spray and liquid) are available in our stores.

How to preserve the technical qualities of the boots

This product is guaranteed for two years from the date shown on the sales receipt. A product covered by the warranty will be exchanged free of charge. The warranty covers product defects, excluding those resulting from normal wear and tear or improper use.
